The contents of the following thread will almost certainly enrage anyone
with religious sensibilities who does not also have experience dealing
with trolls. If you cant charitably and prudently respond to blatant
flaming trollbait then just walk away from this thread. DO IT! DO IT NOW!

OK, now you may go read this: How to suck at your religion.

Yes, it's offensive, crass, insulting, anti-Catholic, anti-Moslem, anti-Semetic, totally irreverent, and definitely blasphemous. It's also, as Admiral Ackbar would say, a trap.

I have some ideas on how this could be countered, but the problem with most of the "standard" approaches is that Matt Inman is a well known troll who doesn't care what anyone says and is well known for delighting in the dismemberment of the reputations of people who foolishly chose to take him at his word. Look what he did to a lawyer who underestimated him.

How can we approach this guy? Ideas?

Ignore it. That garbage isn't worth the time of day.

Also, I've got no problem with things being anti-Islam, as I've no more interest in defending apostate false religions than I do in defending atheism.

I honestly don't give a rat's but about "religion" in the generic - only the One Holy Catholic Apostolic Faith is of any value to me.

Classic Socrates, right there.

In all seriousness, that might be a good approach where Mr. Inman himself is concerned, but we might be able to turn this into an opportunity to reach on-the-fence Catholics etc.

Of all of the anti-religious stuff I've seen on the internet, this is really some of the tamest.

Aye, which is why it'll probably be taken halfway seriously, IMO.

People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. Particularly when living in said house involves consuming the flesh and blood of one's god.

Thank you. I know we've had our share of disagreements but I'm glad we've managed to find some common ground here. :)

i  The Oatmeal.

I just thought this came off angry, like Mormon missionaries had just visited his door and wouldn't take no for an answer. he's done other religion comics before that i thought were funny.

what i told my brother when he posted this was that I don't think someone's religious beliefs should be confined to the private sphere.

I'm going to start regulating other people's behavior by my religious dictates. Please will be happy, at first. There will be lots of alcohol. But then many will become more dour once the sodomy comes into play.

i realize that you & I will not see eye to eye on this. i'm okay with that. and the fact that i'm not great at debating, and i won't be able to answer all your comebacks. i'm okay with that too. just hope you are. just a preface to my commentary.

i cannot regulate anyone's behavior but my own.

The Catholic Church wants to help everyone be truly happy, and to attain salvation, which she does in union w/ the Pope, bishops, and priests through her teachings. this, of course, will not be to everyone's liking. but it is the Church's job to explain, and defend why She thinks the Catholic Church's way is the right way. I argue that it is okay to disagree, even vehemently with what she teaches, as long as you're disagreeing with actual teaching and not a parody of it. but i think that it does a disservice to society to restrict the dialogue to private quarters instead of the public square.

and now, i'm off to drink more booze and eat dinner :)

oops, forgot to add that i think the same goes for other religions as well...agree/disagree with the actual teachings/grounds of that religion, not a parody or obfuscation of the teachings, and let's have that dialogue in the public square.

okay, back to booze. :)

Now I know it’s an impossible task, rebutting with clunking prose what is claimed by fantastic comics, but someone’s got to try, if only for this reason: It’s no kindness to the atheist to let him forever believe that the religious have all the intellectual history of a WBC preacher. I mean goodness, what if he stumbles upon a Dominican? The shock would kill him. Thus and therefore and onwards then, in that frustrating step-by-step manner:
