How Can I Best Support My Friend?

My best friend (who would probably be considered a lapsed Catholic) told me recently that she's seriously considering converting to Judaism. I won't get into all the detail, but she really seems to love and get something from the Jewish faith. Her family is Catholic and very much against the idea.

I want to give her support, but I'm not sure how best to do this in a way that reconciles with my beliefs. She doesn't seem happy in her faith and I can tell that conversion is something she really wants to consider. I want her to be happy, but I'm having trouble knowing how to treat the situation and her fairly - in a way that doesn't compromise my own values.

Any ideas on what I could do?

You're having a tough week.

See other thread. Same advice.

Thank you. I think what you suggested will help in many areas of my life.

One thing I would recommend is showing her just how Jewish the Catholic Church is. We have so many Jewish traditions and we don't even know about it! There was a Catholic convert from Judaism on EWTN once who talked about all of the Jewish traditions we have. I'm sure you can find something on it if you look for it.

Thanks, FP. That's a very interesting point, and I'll search around for the talk you mentioned.

It's kind of hard. While I want her to be happy, and while it's clear that Judaism is making her happy even in her early stages of research, it's difficult to think that she's willing to deny so much. We met up a couple of days ago and were speaking about her thoughts. I did want to ask her about her beliefs regarding Christ but sense it's a difficult point for her.

Have her phone in Rosalind Moss' radio show called From the Heart - the next one is on Wednesday, Aug 1, 2012 - 7pm ET - or she can listen to some of her old shows by downloading them if she wants.

Rosalind is now a Catholic nun Mother Miriam of the Lamb of God but she was raised Jewish and then converted to Evangelical Christianity and finally to Catholicism. so she knows better than most about the Jewish faith and the Catholic faith and perhaps your friend could phone in and speak to her personally about her decision to give up Jesus for Judaism - and what Mother Miriam has to say about it. She is a powerful speaker and makes really good points about why Catholicism if the fulfillment of the Jewish faith.

But in the end, your friend is going to do what she wants to do -- but if anyone could explain to her about both faiths, it is Mother Miriam - from the inside!

That's a great idea, thanks so much! I'll pass on the name of the show to her. Neither of us live in the US, so not sure how easy it would be for her to get in contact with them via phone. But I really think it would help for her to be able to speak to someone who's experienced conversion - not to just encourage her not to convert, but to give her more and better advice and guidance.

Since it's on the Internet - I don't really know but I assume she can just click on the link on that calendar page when ti si on - of course she would have to check the local time compared with the ET time that is quoted on the web page, but I assume they stream it live over the internet. Just my idea though. I am pretty sure I listened to it while in Australia a couple of times.
