Video Game Addiction

I wasted a good amount of my youth with a controller in hand. These days, when I feel like returning to those 60+ hour JRPGs, my laziness gets the better of me and I say to myself, "I just don't have the time or energy for this" and proceed to diddle away my evening surfing the net while Aristotle's Prior Analytics and other usual suspects collect dust on my shelf. The soundtracks are still great, though.

More seriously, I have known people who were addicted to games, though they had addictive personalities which manifested in actual drug problems as well, so, as usual discern and know your weaknesses. I do agree that the cheap sense of accomplishment that one can get from a game should be viewed a bit suspiciously (though I think that's a problem with so much of pop culture in general).

Not when you're talking about gaming. :|

Well, I'm sure you know what you're talking about. I hate internet speak. I'll defer to your wisdom. :)

My brother has had a fascination with computer and gaming for most of his life, and over time it's worsened into an addiction. Addiction can destroy many lives. I think before people start gaming or using the computer regularly, they need to be aware of the potential consequences. It's very easy to lose track of time just by playing games or surfing the net. It's easy to waste a whole day doing that, and in my opinion there's so much more to life than just sitting in front of a TV or computer mindlessly toggling a controller or mouse for hours on end. Doesn't mean I hate all video games though, some of them are pretty great :) But spending hours on them just seems like a great waste of time.

Playing video games used to be my life. I would spend all day playing them day after day. But when I got to be around twelve or thirteen I just got bored of it and did more productive things like playing guitar. I suppose I'm a special case or something.

While it isn't good that you were spending so much time playing games before, that's probably about the age you started to realize you were expected to take on more responsibilities, so that's natural. It's when older teens and adults have taken on responsibilities and then revert back to acting like they have none and spend all day/night playing games that it becomes a big issue.

I don't think it's fair to say that gamers are "mindlessly toggling a controller or mouse for hours on end". A lot of video games require critical thinking including applying real life skills like resource management and development.

Not really, I don't think. I just got bored of it. Playing games wasn't fun for me anymore. Sometimes I'll be in the mood and will play for a few days, but after that I'm bored again.
Working the markets when buying and selling stuff in Runescape and World of Warcraft did give me a bit of useful experience for IRL money managing, I'll admit. And World of Warcraft, especially when using Ventrilo, provokes one to become better at working in or leading a team, which is useful for the workplace.

Games like Rome: Total War and Medieval 2: Total War teach war tactics, history, how to manage things, how to be financially responsible, the fruits of being financially responsible as well as the scorn of being financially irresponsible (I tend to find tons of invaders at my doorstep when this happens), and most importantly, what happens when you overtax the population (Revolts are a thorn in anyone's side). Video games can be a great learning tool.
