CatherineM
We've been asked to consider going to the Ukraine for three months to act as election observers. Besides being a nightmare to arrange for his medication, and I don't like flying, it could be quite razzle dazzle.

I've never been, but one of my professors lived there for a few years. So I'm pretty much no help.

You can just get to Europe (for you, probably the UK) and then ride over by train. I would just make sure to work everything out regarding medication because it might be tricky to get it there. Maybe try to figure something out with the embassy? I doubt they leave themselves totally to the mercy of eastern European pharmacys and they could probably help you all figure things out. That could be really razzle dazzle, though. Just try not to stick out so you're less targeted for crime. Just don't walk around like a tourist and don't speak much. But if you're with a team you'll probably have a pretty good safety net in place. So it could be a really great opportunity with minimal risk. I know some people who have traveled through there and I could try to pass through some questions to them. Also, I'm green with envy (and scurvy)! EcceNovaFacioOmni
I've been there, and my experience was quite safe. It's a beautiful country with a lot of history that you don't hear much about in North America. The west side was part of five different countries during the 20th century and certainly reflects that in its architecture. Outside the cities, the landscape is stunning. The western region is also the only territory in the world with a majority population of Eastern Catholics. As for the logistics, I don't think they were very strict on letting people into the country. I imagine they have a pretty lax policy for Canadians given the large diaspora community there. CatherineM
Well I talked him out of it. It would be the chance of a lifetime, but I don't feel comfortable leaving Zack for three months. I'm not afraid of what he might do, but what his family might do. I need to protect him right now. That's my most important job, and there will be other elections that will need observers in years to come.
