IcePrincessKRS
Maybe, but even so, he hailed his mother as some manner of saint for using birth control and rolling her eyes at the old out of touch white dummy in the Vatican. He said that his mother believed that the church was as much hers as it was Pope Benedict's. Well, no. This isn't a democracy. If you don't like what the Church preaches, man up and do like your son did and leave it.

Criticize his dead mother all you want, I still heard something valuable in the words he spoke. The message I heard may not have been the intended one, but I still walked away with something positive.
Is it weird that I agree with you both? Norseman82
Actually, the funniest part was "she didn't believe that being a good Catholic meant blind obedience - except to her" (around the 5:30 mark). Reminds me of my mother sometimes. Edited July 20, 2012 by Norseman82
Vincent Vega
You people are really jerks sometimes.
Sorry for not crying for his dead mother who did not act like a good Catholic. If it's consolation, there are thousands upon thousands of other people every day - good Catholic, bad Catholic, and non Catholic - who I do not know and also do not cry for. A. shame shame. Edited July 21, 2012 by Hasan
Vincent Vega
Don't know why that would stop her from believing that she'd see her son in heaven. She clearly believed whatever she wanted anyway.
Vincent Vega
If it is unclear why I do not take great delight in Mr. Savage's insight, it might help to refer to his wikipedia article. This may clarify why I do not find his wisdom or that of his heterodox-at-best late mother particularly edifying. franciscanheart
I'm not saying you're off-base in your view of him or his late mother. What I am saying is this: I got something from listening to him. What I got? That the Church - regardless of who is claiming to be a part of it - has a face and impacts people we think aren't listening or seeing or believing. He may not believe anything, and yet he himself says there is a draw. He may not come into the Church again in this lifetime, but he has been touched by it. There is something in his heart that tells him the Church teaches Truth, though his intellect cannot fully reconcile it with the evils of the world. His mother may have been a "bad" Catholic, but she stayed and she prayed and she gave him reason to be near it until her death AND AFTER. My hope for him is that he does realize, that he has a reversion, and that he accepts Truth in all its mysterious beauty. I am not so silly as to believe it will happen tomorrow, but I pray for him anyway.
Jaime
I used to read Dan Savage's column years ago. It was mildly entertaining.
