Graphic Design Woes

I've been having a tough day. Maybe some of you are graphic design gurus and can give me a hand.

I am supposed to be designing some cover page templates that my company can use for things like bid proposals, contract proposals, and other kinds of random corporate document things. Our company logo is a sorta-navy looking blue, so for those templates I made a very nice looking blue theme.

But lately we have been taking some jobs as joint contracts with another company. Their logo is kelly green. I have been requested by my boss to "make the joint cover letter look just like the first one, but with both blue and green," and "I would like the green to be in the center, with blue all around it."

I can't seem to make it work without being hideously ugly. Should I:

a) tell my boss it's hideous, and ask him what he wants to do about it
b) do what I think would satisfy the requirements of "being green and blue" and "looking good," but dumping the "put the green inside of the blue" so that it won't look hideous and hope he just likes it enough to keep it
c) do what he says he wants but will look hideous, and hope he doesn't think I'm doing a terrible job by making terrible cover page templates

Tell him that your not sure that will look good and why. Suggest something else. Gauge reaction.

Would it be too time consuming to do what he asked, even though you think it is hideous, but also include a sample of a design you think looks better?

You forgot the last choice:

d) flip a table.

If you have time, I would do this. Put together something that meets his specific requirements, but spend most of your time on something that has green and blue and looks good. Then he can choose which one to use.

If you don't have time, I would ask how important the green in the middle/blue on the outside spec is, or is there is some wiggle room there.

This is a common problem for any design job. The best thing to do is present two solutions. One, as close to what was requested as possible, and the second, the design you would do if you had free reign.

In a newsroom environment, this is a perfectly acceptable option. :|

Presenting two designs also reinforces:

1. You can follow directions and compromise
2. You take the initiative to make possible improvements
3. Leadership skills

In essence, what you are saying is, "I do not agree with the original concept, here is my recommendation." But you do so in a way that is not being insubordinate.
