whenever I go to a Mass en espanol, they always clap. I don't know how I feel about it. On one hand I don't like it, on the other, I'm too disoriented by all the Spanish words.

I mean this is America. People need to learn to speak American!

(but probs the vigil if I had transportation an all)

havok, I was jokin' bro. Maybe not a very good joke, but the least you can do is gimme a pity laugh.

That wasn't funny (coming from a Spanish speaking person). Remember you do have members on the Phorum of all races and cultures here -- not everyone is in America, and of those of us who are there are those who are of a different race and/or culture.

This thread frustrates me in all sorts of ways...

I would equally like both. I think (and I have witnessed this) that a band can play at Mass and still stay reverent and stay within the mystery of the liturgy. It happens all the time at various youth conferences.

I would also love the Vigil Mass.

I feel that my personal preferences on how I like to worship (whether it be in a more conservative or contemporary way) does not change what the church teaches on how the Mass is to be celebrated. That is an obvious fact that we can all agree on.

But what does the Church actually say? Does It say "though shalt not have a band at Mass?" Does it say, "though shalt not be joyful at Mass"? If so, then fine. No joy, no drums, and no "New Evangelization".

Your absolutely right that there should not be applause at Mass, but there are different ways of clapping other than applause.. When a Mass ends at a Youth Conference the place is usually alive with a joyful energy. We clap along with the music because we are happy, and we are celebrating. Isn't that what Mass is? A celebration?

Don't get me wrong though, I would never tolerate a "kum-ba-ya" attitude in Mass. But there is a difference between a Contemporary Mass, and "Jesus Camp".

Im probably about to get chewed out for this, but hey, you asked. End rant.

THIS ... agreed BigJon16. I actually choose to go to the Mass I go to because of the livelyness. When I go to what would be considered a "traditional" Mass, I can almost fall asleep. Mind you -- I have gone to traditional Masses where the preaching is so good that the Music was a non-necessity, but a whole bunch of times the preaching/music/etc in combo would put anyone to sleep, even the most avid Catholic. That's a shame.

If played well by a trained musician, the guitar can add reverence to the mass

I've heard a guitar played in a way that made me feel reverent, but it was on iTunes. I've never heard a guitar played reverently in any mass I've attended in my lifetime. Your statement is good in theory, but not in practice.
Um ... I was just at a wedding, where the main musician was a Classical guitarrist. Between the Classical guitarrist, the professionally trained male voice, and my (trained) voice the music at the wedding was heavenly.

The guitarrist actually played the wedding march WITH HIS GUITAR. I was impressed. I sang Shubert's Ave Maria, accompanied by Guitar, and again it was great. I did duets with the male voice. Simply Beautiful -- and the confirmation of it were the commentary after the Mass. The music and the homily by the priest were really spot-on, and the wedding was beautiful (one of the best I've been to).

And dUSt ... I play guitar at Mass at least once a week at the Spanish Mass. No -- not everything I play is with the same rhythms that would be used at a traditional english speaking Mass. But I do play with one thing in mind, especially leading up to Communion ... to lead everyone into Worship with Christ.

Not everyone (obviously) will agree in that the guitar can be used at Mass Culturally the guitar is the instrument of choice in Latin America (at least as far as I have experienced in Mexico, Bolivia, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and Argentina).

My choice ... Sunday Mass. Especially if it is in Spanish :).

When properly used drums can be very reverent.

I didn't read the thread, but I would choose whichever Mass I could most easily get to with my four kids and husband. :)

Sure, just not for Mass. Instruments that call attention to themselves should specifically be banned. Drums, by their very nature, call attention to themselves.

I was making fun of people who are always speaking with an unpleasant disposition about how people need to learn to speak English, not people who don't speak English.

But whatevs

Ice_nine, remember that posts on the internet are written not spoken, so sometimes irony/meanings/tones/etc do not get properly transmitted. As I said, I didn't read it as funny, which meant that something was "lost in the transmission".

No I don't come close, but I do fingerpick a lot of songs (my own fingerpicking style since I haven't taken a single guitar lesson). I do know someone who had that sort of talent, and it was great when he played at (English) Mass.

If I had the time I'd try to pick up the skill, but earning a living trumps a hobby. :)

So Jesus is so important, we shouldn't care how we worship Him? You are arguing that it does matter how we worship God so long as He is present.

Either it matters in how we worship Him, or it does not.

The Church says it matters. Unless if your prepared to argue why we should discount Church teachings with clear logic, reason, and wisdom with special revelation, then this debate is over.

It is time to back up your charges with Church Teaching. Back in this thread, I cited some stuff to emphasize that the Church does in fact have regulations on the music as it does not leave it to "Open Season" despite what some parishes do.

Unveil your charges and clarify with specific examples from this thread. I am not here to feel good. :crusader2:

well since you seem be on attack mode in the open mic section, i guess i will leave it at this:

the church teaches Jesus is present in the mass. to croutons all over a mass is... well we know what it is since Jesus is there. is having a little more respect for the mass, even an illict mass a bad thing? if there are errors in any specific mass then no doubt bring them forward. although acting like an illict mass is no better than what people are implying is not right. cause where the mass is illict on not Jesus is still present. something i am sure you will agree with. something i have been saying but apparently your not understanding this.
