CreepyCrawler
i was thinking about this today while putting away dishes and i can't decide whether st. joseph was jesus' foster or step-father. he could be step father since st. joseph wasn't his biological father and he married jesus' mother. but he could be his foster father since he adopted jesus and it's not like st. mary was remarrying or anything. what do you think? Pio Nono
JMJ 5/17 - Sixth Monday of Easter If St. Joseph was Christ's step-father, that would imply that Mary had previously been married, which wasn't the case.
homeschoolmom
many step parents adopt their step chidren... so, it could be #1 otoh... foster parents keep the child until such time as his bio parents can take and raise him... not quite right... so, #1, I guess... I prefer his earthly father...
homeschoolmom
yeah, Pio Nono is right... I don't think either one is quite right... It was a pretty unique situation...

Maddalena
I prefer saying St. Joseph is Jesus's "earthly father".
1337 k4th0l1x0r
I hate to threadjack, but this reminds me of an argument I had over Jesus's 'brother's'. He took the bible translation very literally and said it could only mean brother and there was no other interpretation. I then asked him if he believed that Jesus's father was God and he said yes. Then I asked if he believed Jesus's mother was Mary. Once again, yes. Then I asked him who the parents of Jesus's brothers would be. I think I made my point and he started to say that the word brother included half-brother. I pointed out to him that he was now contradicting his previous view that it could only mean brother and that the word in fact CANNOT mean brother. It's a good argument for countering their argument, especially if they're insistent on brother meaning whole brother.
crusader1234
I like Maddalenas answer. He was the father of Jesus' humanity whereas God was the father of Jesus divinity.

HomeTeamFamily
If St. Joseph was Christ's step-father, that would imply that Mary had previously been married, which wasn't the case.
i was thinking the same thing out of the two choices, i pick foster father for the reason above.....but neither of them, IMO, accurately describe St. Josephs role, which was earthly father and chaste spouse Edited June 7, 2004 by lankyswimmer

HomeTeamFamily
i dunno, but everywhere i see a prayer with St. Joseph its always "St. Joseph, her most chaste spouse, etc" plus, isnt he the icon of chastity?
littleflower+JMJ
yes, St. Joseph was chaste, before and after marrying Mary. St. Joseph is the foster father of Jesus. +JMJ+
