franciscanheart
FP, if you decide to give the BS a try, know that it will feel SO WEIRD at the beginning. It feels, IMO, a little like rubbing dirt in your hair. Just work it around (like they wash your hair at the salon, with the tips of the fingers) and rinse really well. Regarding the ACV, you won't be able to smell it once it dries. If you can, you're using too much. That is, if you can smell it post-dry, your solution is not diluted enough. If your hair/scalp tends toward oily, you'll need more BS than ACV. If the opposite, more ACV, less BS. :like:
franciscanheart
Okay, amesome. But what about the frequency of washing? Currently, I wash my hair five to six days a week. I use no conditioner, mostly because I don't know what it does, but yeah. I would bet you'll probably have to start out with baking soda paste every other day. The first few weeks are typically the worst re: oil production. That's when you'll really need the BS. Just feel it out as you go. Maybe every other day the first week or two and then every 3-4 in a few weeks. Everyone is different and your transition may be more or less obnoxious than ours. No way to know! Just "listen to your body" and pay attention to how your hair feels and looks and you'll know what to do. As your chemicals start to balance without all the harsh stuff in store-bought shampoo, you'll need less and less (baking soda) "no-poo".
Basilisa Marie
How does this baking soda thing affect dandruff? It would be amesome if I could manage my hair, but I'm afraid that going this route might really aggravate my scalp. Also I'm nervous about the adjustment time. Just how much like a hobo will I look and for how long? ;( It depends on why you have dandruff - I have it sometimes. If you have it because of the fungus thing, BS and vinegar probably won't help. But if it's because you get a dry scalp or an overly oily scalp, it'll help. :)

IcePrincessKRS
Hey Boozer -- will you list post-shower products you love again? My daily go-to products are Mixed Chicks leave in conditioner and argan oil (I've used a few different brands, and 100% pure argan oil that I got from my soap ingredients supplier, they have all worked pretty well). After I shower I apply a dime sized bit of argan oil to my very wet hair, and then a quarter sized amount of Mixed Chicks. I always let it air dry. On days when I don't have enough time to do the whole routine (or if I showered the previous night but my hair is insane) I will start over with diluted Mixed Chicks (in a spray bottle, a few pumps of MC and filled to the top with water, shake it well); depending on my hair that day I can either mist it lightly to revive my curls or soak it completely with the spray bottle. I have a couple of sulfate-free conditioners I use (Organix is a fave), interspersed with ACV (mainly I've been using ACV daily with conditioning once or twice a week). I've been using baking soda for the wash part, but every so often (about 2 weeks?) I use a regular (sulfate-free, usually) shampoo if I don't like the way my scalp and roots are feeling--maybe I need to try letting it go for longer, but the last time I tried my roots were the greasiest I've ever seen them... My scalp is still a bit off right now (right after Christmas, post strep-infection, I broke out with a nasty case of guttate psoriasis, which included scalp psoriasis and I'm still on clobetasol to treat that. It's not nearly as bad as it was, but not 100% better yet), so I haven't been able to go back to my 2 week+shampoo-only-if-I-really-need-it routine, and have been having to use it a little more frequently (I just shampooed 2 days ago, but I think it was close to 2 since the last time before that.). tl;dr version: shampoo only when necessary, baking soda the rest of the time ACV pretty much daily, conditioner a couple times a week daily routine post shower, argain oil and Mixed Chicks (in that order) air dry Edited April 10, 2013 by IcePrincessKRS

A good BS scrub followed by ACV and post-shower oil keeps me dandruff free more often than not. I sometimes have to change up my proportions to make my scalp happy. Lil Red
Also: my skin cleared up a ton when I started no poo. I don't know if it was a combo of not using as much product in my hair which touched my face or training myself not too touch my face and hair so much or what. PhuturePriest
It's true. It does feel super soft. I used to use no conditioner, only BS and ACV. But the water here makes my head itch terribly without conditioner, but I actually use horse conditioner (and I use BS every now and then if I want to clean it). But anyway, when I DID use it, it was super soft. What is "plopping", Franny? I'm glad I'm not the only one who was wondering that.
franciscanheart
What is "plopping", Franny? It's a stupid way of saying "tying up your hair". I've tried sleeping in silks but they always fall out. I'm going to test sleeping in a plop tonight. I'll post pictures or video later tonight of what I'm talking about. It's basically a tshirt turban for curls. One of my problems is that I'm a face toucher. I always have my hand on my chin when I'm thinking or something, and I touch my face a lot. I should probably put one of those cones around my neck. In trying to quote your post, I accidentally deleted it. :( I'm on my phone and it didn't even ask me to confirm the deletion. :ohno: I was able to hit "back" and quote but I think the post is gone. Every time I touch my hair I have to stop right away. You just have to consciously think about not touching!
