Hair Tips

The difference in Red's tresses since she quit using commercial shampoo and conditioner is amazing. I'm not exaggerating. I haven't given up all my commercial products, but I wouldn't knock DIY stuff either. Different things work better for different people.

Everything always comes down to the individual level, but what I was saying was from a broad level perspective. (probably should have noted)

There are a million and one different hair types out there but I dont think the answer is DIY products...nor is the answer consumer products. It really depends on your personal preferences. What works for Red wont work for everyone else.

And besides...cleaning my hair with straight vinegar and juice? There is nothing in there that actually cleans it! Vinegar is an acid...juice has acid...there is no surfactants (soap in the common) to CLEAN it.

That is just my preference though  :bounce:

I use Tresemme conditioner and shampoo plus a light oil/mineral/vitamin spray after it is dry (just on the ends and on my curls) and it really helps with the friz, body, and shine!

This is a strange thread!

Forgive me for saying so!!! My hair is QUITE curly as well but I blow dry it and add product.

I wouldnt consider using home remedies in place of consumer personal care products.

I work at a very large chemical product company and I do a lot of work with surfactant chemistry and cleaning chemistry. I can tell you first hand that there is a lot of work and research that goes into personal care products and how well they clean and react with your skin and hair. There are a lot of factors that the average person doesnt realize that go into making these things and its not something you can easily duplicate at an in home basis that will work at the same scale.

it works for me.  and has for quite some time.

Well, this thread is all about sharing what works for us (individually). We're always open to hearing which products you love. (Just not anyone poo-pooing the methods that have worked for us/them/me/you/whoever. ;) )

i don't know the science behind it, but i know that this DIY for my hair, works. i may not be a smart man, jennie, but my hair is getting clean, and has never been healthier. oh, and i don't use apple cider vinegar to clean my hair. I use baking soda/water mixture.

If it makes you feel better, I have never thought of you as a smart man.

Quid Est Veritas?

How does this baking soda thing affect dandruff? It would be awesome if I could manage my hair, but I'm afraid that going this route might really aggravate my scalp.
Also I'm nervous about the adjustment time. Just how much like a hobo will I look and for how long? ;(

i'm afraid i can't help - i've never had dandruff. :( adjustment time varies, for some people it's a couple of weeks, for others it is a month or so.

i think a good way for someone to start off a no-poo routine is to simply lengthen the amount of days between shampooing. This would also help the icky transition phase. So if someone is shampooing every day, start with shampooing every other day, then keep lengthening the amount.

I've read a bunch of stories from women who had tried that with no success. It's all or nothing, it seems. I could see going a couple days but after that, you've really just gotta leap -- and be patient trough transitioning.

What consequences are there to simply using normal shampoo? This isn't coming from a skeptical side, it's coming from a "I like my hair thick and feathery, and I fear this is going to make my hair flat" side.

Red has gained tremendous volume! You should see her product photo vs non!

A lot of what CLEANS hair is the friction. You'd probably crap a brick if you heard that some people only use WATER.

I am a no-poo-er, too, and my hair has never felt better. How I treat it post-shower determines a lot of how it looks (flat or frizz is yuck) but it feels amazing and is definitely clean. I use BS about once every 7-9 days with only ACV in between.

I have been trying out a new oil post-shower but haven't noticed enough of a difference to keep it up once this sample runs out.

(Ice & Red: the oil sample is from one of those boxes y'all get. A friend gave it to me!)

Oh and another thing -- no one is saying shampoos don't do a great job CLEANING. They do. And in my experience, they do too good of a job!!

I would encourage everyone to try cutting all those chemicals where they can. In my mind, they're completely unnecessary.

Hey Boozer -- will you list post-shower products you love again?

What about softness? I have really soft hair, and I don't want it to feel rough.

Mine is SO soft. It's soft, shiny and light. I've never been more satisfied with it every single day.

My biggest struggle is LEAVING IT ALONE! BUT, I started plopping occasionally and plan to do it every wash, starting tonight. Hopefully that will help!

Okay, awesome. But what about the frequency of washing? Currently, I wash my hair five to six days a week. I use no conditioner, mostly because I don't know what it does, but yeah.
