Lil Red
i think i'm on week 3 or 4 of doing the baking soda/vinegar - only once a week doing the baking soda (any more and my hair gets too dry), but every day rinsing the ends of my hair with apple cider vinegar. carmenchristi
If someone needs to bathe as though they are a dog, there's a problem.
hahaha!! Well the point of that was to say that if you want to use peroxide, if you dilute it, it shouldn't bleach ur hair
xTrishaxLynnx
Pretty, Lil Red! That's a lot like what mine looks like when it's short. Looks like you have lots of different length layers? If I have any really short layers I get tight ringlets like Shirley Temple that don't match the rest of my hair.
franciscanheart
Whoa. We've been doing this no-poo thing a long time!! Time flies and all that jazz.Giving a presentation tomorrow on no-poo routines. I've gotten all kinds of crazy looks and even more laughs. All I can hope for is a little open-mindedness.A friend of mine (who either forgot or didn't know I'm a no-poo-er) suggested a tablespoon of baking soda mixed in with regular shampoo to clean my hair before applying a deep conditioning treatment she gave me to test. So for those of you who are nervous, maybe adding this every once in a while would be helpful? I've obviously never tried it, but it sounds like it couldn't hurt.BTW -- Did you know the same sulfates in most drug store shampoos are also in those strong dishwashing soaps you have under your sink? And I'm supposed to put that on my hair? AS IF, MAN.
Lil Red
i think a good way for someone to start off a no-poo routine is to simply lengthen the amount of days between shampooing. This would also help the icky transition phase. So if someone is shampooing every day, start with shampooing every other day, then keep lengthening the amount. Lil Red
i do not use conditioner at all. once a week, i use a baking soda "paste" (1 TB baking soda + just enough water to make a paste), put that on my "crown" area, working it around (think of what hairdressers do when they wash your hair), including temples. rinse well. then use 2 TB apple cider vinegar + 8 oz of water just on the ends of my hair, let set for a couple of minutes, then rinse out. as i have curly hair, i don't towel dry, but use the "old t-shirt trick" (squeezing out the wetness of my hair by using an old cotton tshirt). i do the apple cider every day. also: I've lengthened my days between cleaning. I now clean every 12-15 days.

Basilisa Marie
I think part of it has to do with what's in the water coming out of your faucet, too. When I first posted I was living back home at my parents' house, and they've got their own well and the water is super clean. Right now I'm living in Dayton and there's so much crap in the water my brita filters only last about a week and a half and I leave the water out in a pitcher at night to let some of the stuff evaporate out of it. My hair also gets greasier and I break out more often. But when I'm home, three days and everything clears up and is wonderful again...right before I have to fly back to school. I tried the oil cleansing method for my face here, and that was a TOTAL nightmare (I still have the acne scars! Yay no more vanity!) So yeah. Water, yo. AwedbyHisGrace
Baking soda and apple cider vinegar just felt like way too much work to me- I've tried it before. So shampoo is necessary for me, because of my laziness =) I just use a little bit of sulfate free shampoo and silicone free conditioner. And I make this vitamin C solution (vitamin C crystals + water) that I use to get rid of chlorine - I like to swim a lot.
CrossCuT
 ummmm, hello? what's the smilie for? :hehe: This is a strange thread! Forgive me for saying so!!! My hair is QUITE curly as well but I blow dry it and add product. I wouldnt consider using home remedies in place of consumer personal care products. I work at a very large chemical product company and I do a lot of work with surfactant chemistry and cleaning chemistry. I can tell you first hand that there is a lot of work and research that goes into personal care products and how well they clean and react with your skin and hair. There are a lot of factors that the average person doesnt realize that go into making these things and its not something you can easily duplicate at an in home basis that will work at the same scale. The difference in Red's tresses since she quit using commercial shampoo and conditioner is amazing. I'm not exaggerating. I haven't given up all my commercial products, but I wouldn't knock DIY stuff either. Different things work better for different people.
PhuturePriest
What consequences are there to simply using normal shampoo? This isn't coming from a skeptical side, it's coming from a "I like my hair thick and feathery, and I fear this is going to make my hair flat" side.
