Archaeology cat
My hair is fairly coarse and dry, too, but I don't seem to need conditioner. I will say that my hair is dryer now that I'm in FL. Maybe it's the sulfur water.
Marie-Therese
I should try this. Been thinking about it for a while. I got my hair cut off quite a bit (it's a bob cut midway between chin and shoulders) and have been wearing it straight. My curl got so unwieldy and ridiculous that I just had to do something with it. Perhaps this might make wearing it curly less of a hassle. I have curls that have little regularity and tend to just go wherever they want to.
My curls are the same.I went through a phase where I wouldn't leave the house without straightening my hair. I'm thinking about getting my hair cut about the same length as yours so that I can wear it down and curly without having it on my neck (it will end up a couple of inches shorter once it curls.) I'm hoping I'll still be able to put it up if need be, though... because there are those days when it's just going to look ridiculous no matter how much I try. franciscanheart
I tried the vinegar/baking soda and I like it a lot!! I thought my hair would be oily by the end of today, but it isn't! I also did the old t-shirt trick, which worked well. My hair dried a lot faster than it usually does, which probably means that either the moisture is being locked in by the baking soda, or that my hair is now waterproof lol. I didn't get to leave my hair down because it was way too hot, but once it razzle dazzles down I can't wait to see what this does for my curls.
My hair has always seemed to dry "faster" when I squeeze into an old tee and then twist out of the way while I dry the rest of my body. Not that you asked, but here's how the end of my shower looks:

Turn off water, etc.
Slide my fingers over the bulk of my hair, gently squeezing -- just enough to rid it of the bulk of the water trapped in there.
Grab the argan oil and apply a nickel-size amount to all of my hair. (I have long hair and spend about 30 seconds tops on this step.)
Use one of my soft, old tees to gently squeeze out the rest of the obvious moisture.
Flip the tee upside down (so the really wet side is on the bottom) and wrap my hair up into a twist atop my head. IMPORTANT: do not secure with a hair tie. Just keep twisting and tucking until you can move around reasonably well without it falling constantly.
Dry the rest of me and dress.
Remove tee AND DO NOT TOUCH HAIR.
The end.
i use just a bit of argan oil, on the ends of my hair after squeezing the moisture out. thought i had put that in my previous post, but i must have forgot. this is what i use: http://www.sallybeau...ml?cm_vc=SEARCH
looks like she hadn't seen the part about the argan oil (or no one mentioned it) and honestly, even when my hair has been really dry, i haven't needed more than the oil to restore. ice might be a better source for "natural" after product as i don't use any. (as we all know, i don't really put much effort into controlling what my hair does after i take it out of the towel.)
IcePrincessKRS
ummm, i dunno. i'm pretty new at this. but maybe franny or ice can give their two cents. if just argan oil isn't working, i will use a little mixed chicks (or mixed silk is the knock-off brand) leave-in conditioner.
I mainly just use the Mixed Chicks/Silk (quarter sized squirt) and Argan oil (dime sized drop) every day (My hair is about halfway down my back, with shorter hair you will probably use less of the MC, but the Argan should absorb right into the hair's cuticle). I do have a recipe for amesome homemade hair goo (that I haven't used in ages because since I'm already putting Argan oil in it it seems a little redundant to put another oil based product on it). I tried the no-shampoo deal for about a month, maybe a little longer, but something about the water here makes my scalp freak out. It got really dry and flaky (not itchy, just super dry). I never had an issue with it feeling or appearing overly greasy, but I had to go back to Selsun shampoos because nothing else has soothed my scalp when it gets that dry. I'm working my way back down to shampooing once a week, or once every other week. Maybe the next place we live will work out better for cutting it out altogether. PhuturePriest
Just use a razor. No more hair, no more problem. Also gets rid of any lingering tendency towards vanity....
Somehow I missed this comment. Sometimes I think of going that route. My hair has led me to have some vain thoughts as of late. Perhaps I should read the Bible and let Delilah inspire me? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T4W9NhbjoRg&feature=fvwrel Edited July 13, 2012 by FuturePriest387

carmenchristi
I tried the baking soda and vinegar thing, but it didn't work for me. My hair felt gross. And yes, I did rinse it all out, but it felt soooo dirty and grimy and itchy. I tried all different combinations and mixtures because cheap convent shampoo was driving me crazy. Anyway, I found a different solution and was using a recipe that I liked: 2-3 tbsp chick pea flour, 1 tbsp yogurt, 1 tsp honey and water to mix it all up. It's great... then as a conditioner, yogurt and cocoa powder or egg yolks (to be rinsed out with razzle dazzle water!). Sounds almost like a cookie recipe, no? So if you ever get skunked, you could go that route
