Cleaning A Chandelier

Recommended Posts

my parents have a chandelier, and i need to clean it. it's not crystal (just glass, i think). i remember my mom cleaning it with a soapy solution, then rinsing in clean warm water, then drying with a dish towel. but i don't know how much soap (like dawn) to how much water. tips, please?

Edit: I think it is crystal.

I am of no help. We never clean our chandelier because it is two stories up. We have a two story house and there is an open balcony on the second floor, and the chandelier is way up on the ceiling. Hopefully someone else will be able to help you more than I or he that wanders.

I'd start off with just a small amount of soap, clean a small area and see how it works. If it's glass a bit of vinegar and dawn mixed with water should do the trick. I often wash the windows with paper towel and plain vinegar (white, not apple cider). The smell doesn't last long and it works really, really well. :)

This site has a recipe that doesn't make too much (that way it's not a huge waste if it doesn't work well!)

I used to take dawn and vinegar in a cup and dip the pieces in. Second cup with just water and lemon juice to rinse. Then dry.

Just fill up the bathtub with hot water and a gallon of vinegar and then dip the whole thing in it. Just make sure you disconnect it from the electrical connections first.

Do you want to clean it again in the future? If not get a sledghammer and a high power pressure washer, use the jet stream nozzle and when the pieces fall hit them with the sledgehammer to try and knock off any persistent spots. I bet you are never asked to do the job again. Hope this was helpful...

Or, Windex makes a glass cleaner for home exteriors that you simply spray on and rinse off, it will clean even the toughest dirt leaving the glass clean and you just let it drip dry and it looks as if you had wiped it. I have used it on the exterior of homes even those outdoor lights with the glass and crystal panels, of course you would have to remove the thing piece by piece like a good girl.

When I had to clean the chandelier when i was young, my mom would make a warm water and vinegar mixure, put it in a spraybottle, and promised to 'knock me into next week' if I broke anything.

any dish soap with the addition of vinegar will work. Old diapers or T-shirts will polish them to sparkle.

is it crystal if it gives off rainbows?

A gallon of water with a squirt of soap and a couple of tablespoons of vinegar ( up to a 1/4 cup) is what I use. Make sure you cover any sockets with a sandwich bag and power is off. I take all the crystal off and soak them, then dry with old T shirts and replace them. The fun part is picking a new arrangement for the hanging chains so it looks like a new light fixture. The hardest part is getting the chain part from the ceiling to the fixture clean because you don't really want to get it wet with the wiring. I put newspaper on top of the chandelier to catch the gunk then use a soft kitchen dish brush to clean that.
