Antigonos
The Nun's Story seems to keep coming back! This is at least the third time since I joined VS that a thread has been started...quite amazing, really.

I really appreciated this movie when I was first discerning, but now that I watch it, it just seems so sad. Of course, things were different pre-Vatican II, but after seeing the overwhelming joy of the Poor Clares (and sisters today in general) it is hard to watch this, as Gabriel (sp??) has this overwhelming sadness in her eyes throughout the movie. Clearly, she did not have a vocation to the life, but it is still hard to stomach. I still appreciate the 'behind the scenes' look into religious life, though! NonNovi
Love the film, I can keep watching it over and over again (except for the end, it's so sad). I don't think sister Luke has sadness in here eyes, it's more of an internal struggle. Joy and pain at the same time. I think we all will experience the same difficulties some day Wish there was a "The priest's story" (but we have "The Cardinal" of course). There is definitely a conflict at certain points, but I always thought the point of the movie was that she wanted to be a nurse and became a sister to do so...she is admittedly so happy when she is nursing but the majority of the time just living convent life she seems unfulfilled and sad. I have heard other views of the movie though, so it is obviously open for interpretation.

It was obvious from the beginning, but, for whatever reason, the Reverend Mother kept insisting that she would overcome it somehow. I think Dr. Fortunati made her realize her struggle that she had been running away from since her entrance. Funnily enough, Simone (Sr. Marie Christine) who left at the end of novitiate said she thought Gabrielle would stay there forever. Some things aren't always certain, even after final vows. AnneLine
If you get the chance, read the book. I like the movie, but the advantage of the book is you learn more of what is going on inside Sr. Luke's heart and soul. She actually DID ask her superiors whether she should delay her vows, because she felt she was struggling too much. They told her no. As many PMers have noted in their own vocation struggles, sometimes people who are under vows realize that God really did want something different. Sister Luke probably would have been much happier in a community with a little less structure and yet with an active nursing apostolate. I found myself thinking over the last few days (while watching the video on the Servants of Mary, Ministers to the Sick) that she probably would have been much happier in that community as there didn't seem to be many of the structure problems that she found so hard in her community (such as not talkin gto the sick patients during the grand silence). Much as we all hate to see a sister leave, it seems to me that if Sr. Luke finally discerned after a long struggle that she had no vocation and that GOD wanted something different from her all along.... then I am happy for her that she was able to go forward to do what God wanted. (That was explained very clearly in the book,btw....). I also like the way she interacts with the nursing student, Lisa, making sure that she is entering the convent for the right reasons.... As I noted on one of the other Nun's Story threads, the community that this was based on the Sisters of Charity of Jesus and Mary of Belgium, had originally been founded on the model of a Cistercian community... and those sisters were trying to keep to the entire Cistercian prayer schedule and do an active apostolate. And that is the way it was for MANY active sister communities in the 1920's and 1930's. And, of course, life for ALL people ws much different back then..... and Edwardian Society was much more rigid and structured for everyone. Others may disagree.... but it is always fun to discuss 'nun books' isn't it?
