Noel's angel
I kinda like the quote. It annoys me when women get this 'girl power' thing going on and assume everything is a way of keeping them down. There are many things that could be described as fragile, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. You could have a beautiful piece of porcelain and you would take great care of it precisely because it is fragile. For me, the quote should inspire men to see the beauty in the fragility, to care and appreciate the unique beauty of their spouse, and of every woman. Yes, I'm all for equality etc. but I'd still like to know that when there's a scary spider creeping around, my man will be there to throw it outside. MissScripture
i make my husband squish them.
So, last weekend we were at my Grandma's house and my cousin needed a plunger. He had gone through the whole upstairs looking for one and couldn't find one, so he asked if we had any idea where she might be hiding it. My dad suggested we look in the basement (we did, no luck) and then in the well room, which is a little door in the wall, and looks like it will be very creepy inside. My mom came downstairs and told me that Dad suggested that, and we both stood there and stared at the door until my cousin came down and my mom said, "He's a boy. It looks icky in there. He can open it. There are some things that are just meant for boys to do." (And I make my husband squish 'em too. And any bug that will crunch when you squish it. I can kill ants, mosquitoes, and that's about it...The crunchy bugs make my skin crawl.)

This may not even be the personal conviction of the authoress. She might have simply placed it in the mouth of a character she invented to fulfil a trope. (Luigi, Your predicted origin seems to be only slightly off target geographically. Given the name of the fictional character who says this, it would seem that he hails from Scotland. ) Edited July 12, 2012 by Innocent
PhuturePriest
Oh, the fine art of bug squishing. It's not rare for my sister to scream and yell for me (It's amazing how even though she has two brothers she always yells for me) and tell me to kill it. Honestly, as weird as it may seem, I like it. It makes me feel as if she needs me and I have use around the house, even if my uses are killing bugs/spiders and opening tea containers. Basilisa Marie
Oh, bug squishing. During the winter in college there were more than a few times when I heard a shriek from down the hallway, only to discover that the pickleroaches were finding a warm place to live in one of my hallmates' rooms. My huge anthology of western civilization texts served a dual purpose.
cmotherofpirl
In my house we usually take whatever it is outside after we get out the bug books to ID it. Currently we are having a run on ants and wolfies. Not sure which came first. I do kill the ants and wipe the floor to disturb their trails. Slappo
The quote seems to imply an emotional and mental fragility, which I greatly disagree with.
I agree with this. I also think it's a little difficult to analyze exactly what the sentance is supposed to mean without proper context though. I think within a certain context the sentence might make a good point regarding the dignity of women, but in other contexts it can be degrading women as weak and easily broken.
