Tab'le De'Bah-Rye
as long as the individual is running the race in the hope of victory in christ what of it ?
xTrishaxLynnx
like i'm not saying these other things aren't good, but to say there chatechisis has failed them if they don't know them by heart is wrong and i believe a terrible stumbling block for those whom run on the basics succesfully with grace. St Paul said we must beware of those whom preach knowledge, the way i discern this verse is not that knowledge is bad but ultimately it is GOD whom says, possibly brother adam you should rephrase and say i hope that you all one day will know these off by heart as i do for the glory of GOD and the coming kingdom of heaven. This is all just my opinion anyway and half may be right and half may be wrong or possibly only one 10th right and 9 ths wrong or possibly 9 12ths right and only 3 12ths wrong. YAH DIG ?
And then what if we die tomorrow having never even attempted to put most of them to use in our lives, because we couldn't remember them or, like you, argue that they shouldn't have to be remembered? I don't think Bro. Adam is trying to attack anyone... in fact he's doing the opposite by sharing with us essential tools for our salvation. xTrishaxLynnx
please understand that some are slow runners, some are fast runners, some advance in there christianity very quickly some slowly and some don't get it untill there dying day or heaven perhaps. We must be careful and consider on such an open forum and in the life of the church in general these things. I'm not saying don't run the race at whatever speed GOD has gifted you with to run the race,am just asking you to understand.
Memorizing these things, as Bro. Adam said, could be done in a relatively small amount of time. While obviously we are not likely to successfully apply them to every aspect of our lives by tomorrow, there's no excuse for not trying. fides' Jack
Actually, Bro Adam, a few of these things aren't in the Baltimore Catechism, so I don't have to know them.

To fast and abstain on the days commanded. 3. To confess at least once a year. 4. To receive the Blessed Eucharist at Easter or within the time appointed. 5. Memorizing all the popes would be sweet. Go for it.
Brother Adam
Btw, some of our priests require their 2nd graders to recite all of those to be admitted to Communion. So, are you smarter than a second grader
Luigi
Today is Saturday. Go to confession. Do not die an unprepared death. Your eternal soul depends on it. Your catechesis has failed you if you do not know: The 10 Commandments The 6 Precepts The 7 Sacraments The 3 Theological Virtues The 4 Cardinal Virtues The 7 Gifts of the Spirit The 12 Fruits of the Spirit The Spiritual Works of Mercy The Corporal Works of Mercy The 8 Beatitudes The 7 Deadly Sins The 3 Evangelical Counsels The 3 Eminently Good Works The 9 Ways of being an accessory for another's sin.
Learning and meditating on these foundational formulas gives a person an amazing foundation to build on the spiritual life which is why it is included in most missals. I am not advocating anyone is a bad Catholic for not knowing them, just strongly recommending we learn them as a gift from the Church to help us get to heaven.
