Brother Adam
Most daily missals contain the basic formulas of the Catholic faith, how to make a good confession, and foundational prayers, along with the order of the Mass and readings. If you pick up a 1962 missal, it will never go out of style.
Brother Adam
"Effective catechesis also incorporates learning by heart. For centuries the living tradition of the faith was handed on principally through the oral tradition. From the earliest times catechesis has relied on the Creed, the sacraments, the Decalogue, and prayers, especially the Our Father, as primary instruments of transmitting the faith. The use of memory, therefore, forms a constitutive aspect of pedagogy of the faith since the beginning of Christianity...The blossoms of faith and piety do not grow in the desert places of a memory-less catechesis." Brother Adam
6 precepts? I'm looking at 5 here.
1. To hear Mass on Sundays and holy days of obligation 2. To fast and abstain on the days commanded. 3. To confess at least once a year. 4. To receive the Blessed Eucharist at Easter or within the time appointed. 5. To contribute to the support of our Pastors. 6. Not to solemnize marriage at times forbidden by the Church. Clare~Therese
My catechesis has failed me. A lot. Oh dear. I DID go to Confession today, though. Edited July 7, 2012 by Clare~Therese
Brother Adam
I would say most of those can be memorized in a matter of minutes. Committing them to memory should help us internalize them and live them out as Catholics in the world. Having a missal on hand will also help you to pray in the morning and evening if you don't follow the Liturgy of the Hours. Most have acts of Adoration, the Memorare, litanies, the rosary, morning, and evening prayers, as well as prayer for before and after Mass and after Communion. PhuturePriest
Well, I knew little more than a quarter of what you said, or somewhere around there. At least that's something. Oh, and I am going to confession today, thankfully. I don't have to go as I am not in Mortal sin, but it's always good to go. Okay, scratch that, I don't know a quarter of it. Tab'le De'Bah-Rye
i will stay among the living thankyou very much, i will not let the fear of death drive my christianity. Though it is something to be considered i'm sick of dwelling on it. St Paul states we must hope in heaven, so since faith hope and charity are the major virtues that allow the prince of peace to dwell in us, i'm going to focus on those mainly.I think St paul also states seek the greater virtues or something like that, and than i assume the other virtues will just click in, can't play a playstation game without the playstation so to speak. Tab'le De'Bah-Rye
like i'm not saying these other things aren't good, but to say there chatechisis has failed them if they don't know them by heart is wrong and i believe a terrible stumbling block for those whom run on the basics succesfully with grace. St Paul said we must beware of those whom preach knowledge, the way i discern this verse is not that knowledge is bad but ultimately it is GOD whom says, possibly brother adam you should rephrase and say i hope that you all one day will know these off by heart as i do for the glory of GOD and the coming kingdom of heaven. This is all just my opinion anyway and half may be right and half may be wrong or possibly only one 10th right and 9 ths wrong or possibly 9 12ths right and only 3 12ths wrong. YAH DIG ? Tab'le De'Bah-Rye
please understand that some are slow runners, some are fast runners, some advance in there christianity very quickly some slowly and some don't get it untill there dying day or heaven perhaps. We must be careful and consider on such an open forum and in the life of the church in general these things. I'm not saying don't run the race at whatever speed GOD has gifted you with to run the race,am just asking you to understand.
