Lil Red
"The Declaration of Independence does not read like a document from this world of kings. It hardly reads like a document from any particular world at all. "The first words of the Declaration are, 'When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people...' This does not mean now, in North America in 1776, where killing has broken out between a long-settled government and the people. It does not mean the room in Philadelphia where the signers are gathered. The Declaration does not refer to any particular place. It does not mean those particular signers, either. It does not mean the people who elected those signers. The Declaration does not begin with any reference to those who write and ratify it, or to the nation they are forming. "The beginning treats these events not as something special or unique but as something that occurs 'in the Course of human events.' ...Its signers are at the crisis of their lives, and they begin by placing it in context. Because such things happen from time to time, there are standards according to which one must behave in them." (The Founders' Key by Larry P. Arnn) The text of the Declaration here: http://www.archives.gov/exhibits/charters/declaration_transcript.html

IgnatiusofLoyola
Someone (a Catholic) once said to me that he did not believe in freedom of religion. I'm pretty sure he was just trying to rile me up. Even though I'm not Catholic, my heart breaks when I think of the terrible things that happened not only to Catholic people, but to precious, sacred objects, and places of worship of the Catholic church, when someone or a government decided Catholicism was to be destroyed. Freedom of religion can be difficult sometimes. And, it also brings on questions of "What is a religion?" when a group who shares common beliefs decides to be considered a "religion" for the tax breaks it brings. Despite the fact the the U.S. is not perfect, I am glad to be an American, and today I celebrate that.

[/quote] What you will never learn in a high school American history class is that in the thirteen colonies Catholics and Jews were not treated very well. They were not allowed to have churches (Or temples in the case of Jews), they were not allowed to say Mass (Or whatever the Jewish equivalent is), they were not allowed to go to public activities, they were just treated very horribly, though you would never hear about it. Wait... a light came on in my head... My ancestors have suffered terribly! I'm going to find a Jewish friend and we will demand a casino! CatherineM
I'm the only one in the neighborhood flying the stars and stripes. For my great-grandfathers Edward, Robert, John, and Georg Adam and my great-grandmother Olympia who fought in the Revolutionary War, thanks. Some of the founders who said some of the wisest things also said or did things with which I strongly disagreed. The ownership of slaves, and sexual relations with slaves, as well as the issues you mentioned above, were just a few examples. (Even if a sexual relationship between a slave and a slaveowner was supposedly consensual, could it really be true consent if the one person was a slave to the other?) These were issues I had grappled with a lot. Note: By raising these issues, I am giving examples, and NOT trying to start a debate. If others want to debate these issues, the discussion belongs in the Debate forum. The purpose of THIS thread is to say Happy 4th of July!!! The fact you know your family history is amazing to me. The furthest back we know when it comes to names is my great grandpa Odis, who was a Marine in World War II. We do know that we came from Germany around the time of the Revolution, so we perhaps fought in it, but that's about it.
