havok579257
If the bishops ask us to fast like they are doing for two fridays due to the contraception mandate are we required to fast? Obviously we should. Although my question is, if the bishops ask us to fast and we don't is it a grave sin such as not fasting on ash wednesday and good friday? cappie
Bishops are the chief pastors and administrators of dioceses, or geographic regions. They are instrumental in deciding Church doctrine and in guiding the universal Church. Bishops advise the Pope, but they follow his authority absolutely. Their primary duties are to preach the Gospel of Jesus, teach the people and bring others into the Catholic faith. Catholics in their bishop's diocese must accept and follow their teachings and pronouncements on faith and morals. In the case you mentioned you would have to follow the bishops according to canon 1253. Just like the usual rules of fast and abstinence
