Scrupulosity

Wow. This looks like an excellent forum. I'm glad to have found it! I believe I may have been struggling with scrupulosity slightly, by worrying if I have commited mortal sin. It seems its always something new, and and primarily I spend time trying to figure out my thoughts of the inncident to see if it could be grave matter. and sometimes I just don't know, but am also fairly certain it is too scrupulous to ask a priest about what maybe small things. Sometimes I get to the confessional and feel a strong reassurance that it was indeed but a scrupple, as I confess real sins. Somewhat related, I choose to read a book for school, and while reading it found that some sections contained explicit impure material. I have a large project due in a couple weeks, but have been unsure as to if it is sinfull to look through it to do my project, The majority of it does not contain this material. Also, we watched a movie at school that also had one moderatly explict segment. I turned away, and turned back a few times to see when it was past. when does looking at impure in a movie become sinful, mortally sinful?

slywakka250,

Let me be among the first to welcome you to the Phorum. :)

Good question; perhaps it would be best to learn through an analogy. Say that I have to go to a museum as part of an art history class for college. Let's imagine that one of the pictures that I have to study is rather impure; let's also say for argument's sake that, though artistic nudity can be a beautiful thing (as the human body can be), the line for this piece of art was definitely crossed.

Now, to study this thing, I have to look at it. If I look at it and try my best to remain pure, I'm set. If thoughts start coming to mind and I reject them as best as I am able, I'm fine. But if I start to let them run around in my head a bit, like a hamster on a wheel, then I've started to cross the line. That last scenario would probably be venially sinful. If I drove back to the museum three or four times because I can't get enough of it, that's mortally sinful.

Hope this helps.

Yours,
Pio Nono
