Strictlyinkblot
http://news.sky.com/home/uk-news/article/16244478 The number of women who entered religious life in the UK last year was almost triple that of 2009 with the majority of them being under 40. Okay, so 17 isn't a huge number but its on the up.
EmilyAnn
17 isn't a huge number but it is still a vast improvement on 9. I think we are finally catching on to the need to promote religious life as a valid life choice - many young women (myself included) aren't even aware of religious life as an option anymore. I wonder what the stats are like for men entering religious life.
I don't know that figure, but 467 men were ordained to the priesthood in the US in 2011, according to CARA (Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate) - http://cara.georgetown.edu/CARAServices/requestedchurchstats.html I'll look around for figures on religious entrances.
CARA has a report on final vows taken in the US in 2011 - http://www.usccb.org/beliefs-and-teachings/vocations/upload/New-Sisters-and-Brothers-in-Perpetual-Vows.pdf They don't have comprehensive data - they solicited information, and had a 75% response rate. of the 75% who did respond: 84 religious women 8 religious brothers Brothers studying for the priesthood were not included in this survey, so the 8 religious brothers intend to remain brothers. I've found nothing, so far, about how many people entered... but on the other hand, that figure would be pretty squishy since a lot of people who enter don't persevere to final vows... so I guess those who profess final vows is a firmer number. maximillion
I noticed that in the piece you posted about this it said that it was becoming important that those offering assistance with discernment be prepared to walk with people from their early teens onwards..... Interesting given some of the ages of peeps here who have looked for discernment info/advice and some discussion re ages and what is too early or not...... Gemma
We have a lot going on in the UK. Aside from our discernment group and list of UK communities, we also have an emerging lay society to work for both the New Evangelization and establishment of new communities specific to the region. Here are the links again: http://cloisters.tripod.com/vocations_uk/ http://groups.yahoo.com/group/catholic_vocations_uk_europe/ The first link will list initiatives, not the least of which are the proposed Handmaids of Mary for Mary's Dowry.
