Interesting. You're right, I had been under a false impression, they do not make an explicit promise.

However, according to Canon Law:

I'm able to pay my rent, utilities, and food/necessary expendables for about $7000 a year, so I should imagine that more than twice that should be adequate for a reasonable quality of life, especially if the diocese provides a parsonage/vicarage/rectory/etc.
