Lil Red
In my town the teachers are loaded. This is simply the way things are around here. It may not reflect the way things are elsewhere, but the teachers here are far more wealthy than the average person. Vincent Vega
There are no "promises" of poverty. As my spiritual director says: "Religious communities promise poverty, the diocese assures it."
Interesting. You're right, I had been under a false impression, they do not make an explicit promise. However, according to Canon Law:
Can. 282 §1. Clerics are to foster simplicity of life and are to refrain from all things that have a semblance of vanity.§2. They are to wish to use for the good of the Church and works of charity those goods which have come to them on the occasion of the exercise of ecclesiastical office and which are left offer after provision has been made for their decent support and for the fulfillment of all the duties of their own state.
I'm able to pay my rent, utilities, and food/necessary expendables for about $7000 a year, so I should imagine that more than twice that should be adequate for a reasonable quality of life, especially if the diocese provides a parsonage/vicarage/rectory/etc.
