cmotherofpirl
Well, I guess each has to speak as he or she finds. It is true there are lots of things she could have done worse - but that is nothing, that applies to every single one of us. I, personally, think she could have done much more - but then her constitutional position as head of the Anglican church and our Monarch has prevented this. I still think this is very convenient. I will continue to think this even if the Pope differs from me in his opinion of her. This is not a pronouncement of his on Church teaching, so I am free to disagree. I think that when a person has that much money and that much influence, lots more could have been achieved than has been.
So you expect her to do more even though you admit she is legally limited in what she can do. So far she has conferred 387,700 honors or awards, 540 investitures, received 3 million pieces of mail which her and her staff has answered, met 1.1 million people at her garden parties, met and counseled with 10 different Prime Ministers every week for the last 60 years, is the patron of over 600 charities, made 256 official overseas visits to 129 different countries (over 1 million miles), sent out 300,000 telegrams to her subjects, attended 34 Royal varieties, opened 15 bridges, christened 23 ships, opens Parliament and other official functions, is the constitutional monarch of 16 Commonwealth Realms, head of the 54 member Commonwealth of Nations, head of the Church of England and is a wife, mum and grandma. But she hasn't done enough to suit you...
maximillion
It is not what she does.......it is the importance of those things in an immoral and unjust society. We can all run around like headless chickens and be wildly busy and what doth that profit if we ignore the poor on our doorstep and permit millions to be spent in celebrating the length of time we have been running about like headless chickens? I am not saying she is a bad person per se. I am just repeating what I said above.......with that much power, influence and money maybe there were/are things she could have done to promote a juster and fairer society. That doesn't mean to say she didn't do that, but there are LOTS of folks out there with a tiny fraction of her power and wealth who have done a billion times more. Just cos your a busy bee does not mean you are being effective. I'm leaving the discussion now. I will always think what I think and you guys will think as you do. Maybe we agree to differ. Archaeology cat
Why should it change? The UK has had a lot of unjust anti-catholic laws on their books for some time but this seems to be the one that is extremely reasonable. I firstly don't understand how a Catholic could accept the role seeing as it would force them to function as the head of a Church that is in rebellion with Rome and how could the church of England accept someone of a different faith being the head of the Church? If they ever remove the Monarchies role as nominal head of the CoE then I would see your point, but until that day comes I don't see how the could, or why the should, permit a Catholic (or any faith other than CoE) to ascend to the Monarchy.
Actually, I meant I was praying the CofE came back to the Catholic Church, in which case the nominal head (the monarch) should be Catholic. You are correct that it makes little sense for a Catholic to be head of the CofE as it stands now. My apologies for not being clear.

But on the other hand I don't want to to discourage people from apologizing to me. I suppose what I'm saying is that while you could be excused for not apologizing to me on this particular occasion, you're instincts were admirably correct

r2Dtoo
The very idea of social equality has always and always will be a myth.

J-Roq
You made a political statement. It's not charitable to disguise the truth that the Royals are a lot of parasites. I was happy to leave it at a simple joke until that stupid holier than thou reference to charity. Charity is not 'being nice'. It's not "Oh gee, sure glad one particular someone has been sucking money out of the pockets of the Brits in order to amble around and be a symbol of a long dead British monarchy for longer than anyone else (even those who were actually monarchs)."
I think I'm in love.
