Amppax
As to this idea, blegh. I wouldn't go to school if the only thing I was interested in was gaining skills for a career. I could drop out now and make a whole hell of a lot more than I ever will with the degree I'm getting. I guess for those that view education as merely a necessary evil needed to get a good job, this system would be better.
4588686
As much as I love Franciscan, our journalism department really isn't good.
UNC has one of the best Journalism schools in the country. My ex-girlfriend (WHO WAS REAL!) was a journalism major who was hired for USA Today got scholarship awards for her work and all that stuff and she would still say DOOOONNNN'TTTTT DOOOOOO ITTTTTTTTTTTTTT.
The program here at UF is only two spots behind that at UNC (UNC is number four in the country, we're number six, according to the most recent numerical ranking data I could find), and it would be entirely reasonable for an in-state student to get a degree here for $20,000 (including not only tuition and related expenses, but also housing, food, etc). To be blunt, if you're spending more than five figures for an undergraduate education, you've done something wrong in my opinion. But, hey, it's a free market and that's your prerogative. I have other comments to make (for one, that going off to college is about learning far more than what professors teach in class, for another, I find it funny that while many cry out that wikipedia is a cesspool of falsities, they are suddenly gung-ho about something like the "peer-to-peer university" where "anyone can be a student or an instructor". Uh...), but I'm too tired to make points that are coherent (or at least as semi-coherent as I can usually manage) tonight. Ice_nine
journalism is lame. Creative non-fiction is the new journalism. It's like that stiff, boring uncle who is infinitely more fun to hang around once he has a few drinks in him.

r2Dtoo
Who names a university after a country? Are we really that short on names?
Ok, now that I'm done laughing at you I'll be nice and give you a clue to the school's actual hidden origins.. What happened in 1492?
