Basilisa Marie
I wish I could give you more props, Basilia.
Lol thanks. I was lucky enough to have a sister in one of my classes last term whose order is a member of the LCWR, and she helped us understand one of the sides of the situation that the media is completely ignoring. And Sartain is my bishop, so I'm probably a bit biased because I'm super proud of him and how diplomatic he's trying to be.
Maybe a better solution would be to dissolve the structure of the LCWR and create a completely new body with better guidelines and different leadership. It wouldn't be excommunication but it might be a more thorough and at the same time perhaps easier way to reform this leadership conference.
Maybe, and that might end up being the last resort if things can't get changed. But otherwise it seems that Archbishop Sartain is trying to pull out all the stops to get things working right with everyone. It seems like the body of the organization is what's fine (as nearly all the sisters are doing a-okay), and it's just the people at the top who need to make some adjustments and add some things (like more pro-life stuff, etc) to what they're already doing.
The problem is the media portrays this as a black and white issue: the mean old male Vatican against the poor little white haired sisters, and its working very well in favor of the nuns. If you defend the Vatican the first line out of the opposition's mouth is that nuns don't rape little boys. Perception is everything, facts are nothing.
I couldn't agree more. People don't care about news any more, they just want page-views. And inflammatory pandering is what's going to get them page views.
Tab'le De'Bah-Rye
Hmmm while I definitely agree with the notion and think some action needs to be taken, I have heard pretty convincing arguments that instead we should try to reform these people and pray for them to return....not until all resources have been exhausted should excommunication be implemented. It is a tough call though....and I am glad it is not up to me. While they disconnect themselves from the Church we should not wish excommunication upon them. We must tread carefully.
I agree, I think i read somewhere in the holy bible that we should not wish anothers destruction. And somone explained to me part of this is like doctors wishing for more diseases, all i know is the holy bible says it aint good. And i think i heard somewhere or read that excommunication is not a condeming but a hope that the offenders will repent. Please correct me if i'm wrong. Adrestia
I agree with you Sister Marie but I was watching the CBS evening news and they said that ...
The CBS evening news has a history of inaccuracy. Remember Dan Rather?
I think in this case, because of the media, this would be seen as a further heavy handedness from those bad old men in the Vatican... The sisters who causing the problems already are probably quite willing to defy an excommunication and may even feel it is an affirmation of their 'work.' Those sisters who support women's ordination, abortion, etc. may have already been automatically excommunicated. For these reasons, I don't think excommunication would work.
