Recommended Posts

WASHINGTON (AP) — House Republicans lost an attempt to pass legislation making it a federal crime to carry out gender-based abortions.
In a campaign year when Democrats are accusing Republicans of waging a war against women, Republicans sought to portray the Prenatal Nondiscrimination Act as a women's rights issue.
But the legislation required a two-thirds majority for passage, because of procedural rules, and had no future in the Democratic Senate.
The bill would have would make it a federal offense to perform or coerce a woman into a sex-selection abortion.
Opponents said it would subject doctors to criminal charges and discriminate against Asian-American women. Abortions of female fetuses are an issue in some Asian countries where families prefer sons.

Yes to pass bill: 226 Republicans, 20 Democrats
No to reject bill: 7 Republicans, 161 Democrats

And people wonder why some of us are so opposed to the Democratic Party.

Socrates is writing a twenty page long paper about this as we speak. The introduction, I assume, will go something like "Well, the damned liberals are at it again with their crazy shenanigans..."

In all reality this is terrible. I'm still trying to figure out the logic (Or lack thereof): Republicans fighting for the lives of women that were killed for sexist reasons makes us chauvinistic?

Well to be fair this was simply a symbolic vote anyway...which is probably why Republicans (like Ron Paul) voted against it. There is no chance it would have made it in the Senate and instead of making political moves during an election year we should see some real work to fix our economy, etc. I do support the bill in principle though.

Whoa, whoa, whoa, Ron Paul, Mr. I'm so much more pro-life than everyone else on the planet since I am after all a doctor, voted against this bill? Set up for failure or not, you always try because if there is any chance innocent lives may be saved it is worth it.

No. You don't use silly partisan politics when our country is far from recovering and as recent data has shown may even be going into another recession. If this vote was actually thought to be going anywhere it would be one thing. This was a simple campaign attack manufactured by Republicans to make Obama and the Dems look bad. I want abortion abolished, but I do NOT want the issue of life being used as a political ploy. Anyone who does should seriously step back and take a better look at the situation.

My point is that Ron Paul does not play partisan politics and that is why I really like him as a politician....he is anything but. The whole point of this vote was in reaction to a video released on PP and to make a political move. I would rather a REAL effort be made to abolish something rather than a half assed knew it was going to fail anyway political stunt....it was nothing more.

Nevertheless, it was voted against because it would have been at least an incremental restriction on abortion even if political motivations were a part.

You're a smart person. You know perfectly well that feminists in the US have been very vocal about sex based abortion in Asia. This bill is a stunt designed to

a- test the waters for further legislation to limit abortion

b-embarrass anybody who refuses to participate in this political theater.

Of course feminists oppose it.
