Laudate_Dominum
I saw D'Souza debate Hitchens on the existence of God in college. Neither were compelling, but D'Souza was essentially arguing for some Intelligent Design theory which, if not implausible, was beside the point. I wasn't impressed by that experience, but otherwise I'm not familiar with his work. Last I knew he had an unusual dissonance on whether he could be called Catholic or evangelical, which makes me question the coherence of his apologetic work.
He hasn't called himself Catholic for quite a while now. EcceNovaFacioOmni
Interesting, I knew that he attended an evangelical Protestant church. I read in the past where he'd said that while he's an evangelical, he never renounced Catholicism. I guess I understand what he was getting at now, but that's probably what caused all the confusion. Ice_nine
In my opinion the "scientism" charge is often little more as a caricature or straw man. It's occasionally a valuable discussion, but most often a matter of cliche and cheap discrediting of an "opponent" -- in my experience anyway. Framing the issues in terms of a culture war was suggestive to me of an "us vs. them" mentality.
I see. Yes the us vs. them thing is quite silly. Agreed there. Ian Hutchinson came to my school last semester to talk about whether belief in God was "intellectual suicide." It was nothing I haven't heard before (cause I'm so jeenyus and such) but I think it was valuable for people to hear because I think the general student populace takes for granted the prevailing philosophy (i.e. scientism) as simply "the way things are," and it's good to have that challenged and examined. tangent: Except some things like that at colleges are annoying because then they pass the mic around to people in the audience and a lot of them think they're smart and, my God they manage to sound really dum. This one kid was ranting about how religion gets in the way of scientific progress and how "religion comes in and says 'zygotes are alive . . . '" and then the (agnostic) biologist who was moderating was like "um, just let me jump in for a sec, zygotes are alive." to which he said "sorry I mean well, no one says you can't use lysol because it kills bacteria," or something really stupid like that. I think if they had said, only people who have actually read the bible can share their opinions about it, the mic would have been unused.
Innocent
I appreciate all of the work that you put into this, but I was pretty much just joking in the first place.
As a matter of fact, I too was attempting to be humourous by taking you seriously. However, my attempts at humour on the internet, and especially here on the Phorum, are often misunderstood. Hasan, if you have the time, could you please list out the reasons for your low opinion of the intellectual ability of the subject of this thread? I would be interested in reading them.
Tab'le De'Bah-Rye
How come you can be such a cruel and biting person and still get pink gummy-bears from your great boyfriend, while I am kind-hearted and uplifting and my boyfriend gets me nothing? I'm like the pretty girl who never gets asked to the prom
Why do you wan't to be a girl, hasan?
