This "forest sisters...." means, I think, "erdőkürti pálos nővérek", which is "the Pauline sisters in Erdőkürt" (Erdőkürt is a little town or village).

While these Sisters live a beautiful life and follow the Pauline spirituality, it should be noted that they are not part of the Order of St. Paul the First Hermit (OSPPE) or recognized by the Order. The OSPPE never had nuns in their 700+ year history.

hmmm... I read otherwise on the OSPPEs website

Actually when the sisters’ order was established in 1989 they weren’t in fact part of the OSPPEs but in July of 2003 at the proposal of the Father General of the Pauline Order the sisters were accepted as the feminine branch of the order, recognizing the need for the sisters’ prayers as a support for the Fathers’ ever increasing pastoral responsibilities. At that time the name of the community was also changed from “the Esztergom Expiatory Sisters of Blessed Ozseb’ to that of their current name ‘Monastic Sisters of St. Paul the First Hermit’ MSPPE.

Dear Miles,

During my visits to the American Czestochowa and Jasna Gora and several other monasteries in Poland in 2008 and 2009, various Fathers made it very clear that this community was essentially a Hungarian project.

The Hungarian province of the OSPPE since its revival has been united but mostly independent from the rest of the OSPPE. It was the Hungarian monks that encouraged these sisters not the Order's definitorium. Even the current general, Fr. Izydor, said that they are not officially in the order, and you will not find them listed in the Order's directory.

P.S. There is a lay woman who dresses in a quasi-Pauline habit that passes herself off as a Pauline sister in Jasna Gora, as well as an American laywoman who tried in vain for 6-7 years to found a Pauline community in the northeast U.S. Both have been discouraged and reminded that the OSPPE has never had and does not want sisters.

Thanks for the clarification Reminiscere.

You’re probably right about the sisters’ community being a solely ‘Hungarian project’ – I always wondered how come they don’t have monasteries in other countries while the Fathers are all over the world.

On the above referenced site it also says that there are talks about a foundation of these sisters in Jasna Gora but I guess if the Hungarian OSPPEs are not on the same page with OSPPEs in the rest of the world then this might also just be wishful thinking on the Hungarian Fathers’ part…

Fiat voluntas Dei.

Hm, strange. It is written on katolikus.hu that it belongs to the "associaton of faithful of Christ" (sg. like Chrisitifideles laici?) and it is not an 'ordo' but it is also written that it was accepted as the second order of Paulines.

Miles and Noemi, I have a great, personal love and connection the OSPPE. I don't mean to denigrate or deny the beauty or holiness of this community in any way, please understand that. I just wanted to clarify the canonical status of these sisters as seen by the order in general.

Thank you for the links!

The OSPPE may have it in their constitutions not to get involved with women, since it's one of the more ancient orders of the church.

The Hungarians may be a renewal or recollect branch that isn't aggregated to the other (yet) . Rem can gently correct me if i'm wrong.

That being said, the Pauline Sisters are an association of the faithful, and are likely at the Public Association level right now. Has anyone read anything about their start date, and whether or not they are diocesan right?

The women who want Pauline affiliation are more than welcome to do something on their own, in imitation of the Pauline spirituality. They may eventually evolve into a community, but right now, they could be considered third order Pauline in their hearts.

Blessings,
Gemma
