4588686
This whole thing was planned down to the last detail. The pollsters must have concluded that he'd gain support from gay marriage supporters and not lose support from gay marriage non-supporters (who already don't support him). He sent Biden out to float a test balloon - if the reaction was strongly negative, Biden would've taken the flack. Since the reaction was not strongly negative, the president came out in support of gay marriage, and the media are anointing - possibly even canonizing him. Politics as theater, that's all.
I'm sorry, but this is ridiculous. Let's count the ways. 1- There is nothing to support the idea that the administration orchestrated Biden's remarks. Nobody who watched the press secretary's pathetic attempts to reconcile the administrations desire not to repudiate Biden's remarks with Obama's claimed ideological evolution could possibly believe this. 2-All the reports say that Obama and the wise men were pissed at Biden. As they should have been. See below 3- The timing sucked as my glorious state had only days before supported by a 20 point margin an Amendment to ban gay marriage and civil unions. AnneLine
Sometimes I think our founding fathers must be rolling around in their graves at our current political situation. They weren't saints, and probably couldn't be elected in a million years these days, but at least they had the best interest of the people and the desire to serve them at the forefront of what they were doing. So sad what is going on in recent elections.... my 2 cents.... I agree, it is a silly, tacky magazine cover...

There are two or three major constituencies that this could hurt in an election that is going to be razor thin. This will help him get who? the gay vote and most students? Neither of those compare in numbers to blacks and blue-collars.
Of course, the assumption here is that the voting blocs in question are monolithic in nature, and are privy to very specific beliefs and attitudes held by most, or all, of its constituents. This assumption would be reasonable if we were talking about members of a political or religious party. But since the delineations you are making are based on ethnicity and socio-economic status, there really aren't any "codes of conduct" or "official platforms" to be referenced. There are just as many, or more, liberal "blue-collars" as conservative ones.
