MissScripture
Maybe if you are paranoid you'd have something to add to Mikolbe's to do list?
I think he should throw something and see if he can break the window and get sucked into space. Not really, because then the game would probably end and we'd never know what had really happened...

Innocent
Sorry to nitpick again... - so there's a powerful light coming from the window - presumably from a (relatively) nearby star that is not directly in his field of vision, but is close enough to it that it's lighting the room, and he can still see stars out the window? If the source of a very bright light was coming from outside the window, he would not see stars. Must be a trick.
If I remember right, the existence of the Earth's atmosphere that scatters the sunlight everywhere makes the stars invisible during the day. In space there is no atmosphere, and so, unless there's a bright light shining directly into his eyes, (which isn't the case right now, since from the above description by Arfink, the source of light is not yet in his line of sight from where MIkolbe's standing. Thus the illumination in the room must be due to light coming from the mysterious source through the skylight which is then reflected from the floor and walls, as well as light scattering due to the air inside the room), I assume that the human retina, which some people[sup][who?][/sup] on the internet[sup][unreliable source?][/sup] say, has a higher dynamic range than digital or film cameras, will adjust to the brightness and MIkolbe just might be able to see a few stars. I suppose it depends on the luminousity of the light source. But of course, Physics is not my major, only something I learn by myself (beyond high school level, I mean). So I could be wrong. I seem to recall you saying somewhere that Physics was your field of study, fides? But my memory on this is shaky. I'm not sure if it was you or someone else. Brianthephysicist might be the best person to clarify this. Edited May 31, 2012 by Innocent

fides' Jack
I took a couple semesters of physics - that's all. But astronomy was more useful in this case. No, the Earth's atmosphere doesn't really have much to do with not seeing the stars - unless you think going to the moon was just a hoax. One of the main arguments that conspiracy theorists use when arguing against our going to the moon was the fact that there were no stars in the videos. Well, the videos were shot during the (moon) day, and just like on Earth, the light from the sun overpowered the stars so you could not see them. The moon has no atmosphere. Therefore, from this evidence, I don't believe the atmosphere has much (or anything) to do with it. However, I have no idea what impact any sort of anti-glare coating on the window glass could produce. I'm not knowledgebowl enough. fides' Jack
Ah, nevermind - and Innocent is probably right. You can see stars, even during the daytime, on the moon, but they weren't captured on film because the much brighter landscape of the moon overpowered the cameras. It sounds like if they had pointed the cameras at the sky, then the cameras could have picked up the much fainter (than the landscape) stars. So, proceed with the story, and sorry for derailing. Maybe kolbe is tired and wants to take a nap?
brianthephysicist
I second Red's idea of buying the second water bottle. It's always useful to have an extra bottle lying around. Plus, after he drinks from the bottle to his heart's content, he can refill it in the bathroom sink. He should also buy a beer. One single beer won't get him drunk so we don't have to worry about that, but I hate to leave a button unpressed. He should lightly toss the cat mask (because it's probably expendable) at the dome so that it will lightly touch the glass (if it is glass) without breaking it, or go through it if it is some sort of force-field. I'm still hoping we can find Shea here. I wouldn't want to separate them in time.
brianthephysicist
I'm not sure whether this is a good idea or not, but I'm going to put it out there for some debate: Should we break open the vending machine? Would alarms go off? Some type of space police or space jail? On the positive side, there would be tacos and beer... Lemme know what you guys think. sixpence
I think he needs to buy a beer too... and also... is it a clear vending machine... is there more than one of each item..in case one gets damaged? yes! always carry empty bottles in case you need to catch a fairy... oops..wrong game... AnneLine
rock the machine? He might get free food or drink... or more $$$.... or he might attract the politzia and they MIGHT help him figure out how to get home....
fides' Jack
Agreed - try to break the vending machine - but from the side; we don't want it falling on him.
Sorry I've been hanging around with a bunch of astronomers lately so I apologize in advance with the hijack. whether or not you can see surrounding stars when you are close to a large luminous object (please note not everything in the sky is stars there are all sorts of razzle dazzle things, the quasars and astroids etc that also give off light) depends on many different things. My brain was broken by the talks give today so I won't expand further.
