homeschoolmom
So, it seems that it is improper for Christians from other faiths to be received during Easter Vigil? Why are so many of them received then??
Sojourner
Actually, it makes a lot of sense to me that Christians from other traditions would be received in a different way. I don't know, the Easter Vigil was really beautiful, and I loved the preparatory period beforehand that naturally falls in the church calendar, and I loved being able to participate in the service in a special way. I also grew a lot during the wait, but a lot of what was taught in our classes was redundant for me, and it looks as though I shouldn't have participated in some of the rites that I did. Earlier this year, I'd had thoughts about bringing up this whole topic to my priest, because woman I knew in a different parish had been received in (I think) November, after a series of meetings with her priest. But before I did it, I had a conversation with a friend in which he strongly asserted that RCIA was the norm of reception into the church (which it is if you're a non-Christian, but I had been previously baptized). I took his word for it, but it looks like I should have brought it up to my priest after all.
homeschoolmom
So what's the deal? Are parishes too lazy to deal with Christians who want to enter the church that they dump them all in RCIA? Is it a numbers thing? (We had 30 people received at Easter as opposed to the only 4 that we would have had if only the non-baptized were received)... Sojourner
I have no idea, and couldn't even really take a guess here. If anyone else has a thought, I'd love to hear it, though.
Sojourner
Does anyone know where I can find the "National Statues for the Catechumenate" written in 1986 by the National Conference of Catholic Bishops? I'm having no luck locating the full text of it online, so if anyone knows where it might be that'd be great. Thanks! twf
Yes, I've seen this article before as well. I am currently seeking full communion with the Catholic Church from an Evangelical background (as I have said previously on this board before). My local priest has said that the normative way to be received into the Church is RCIA...and that it is only extraodrinary situations in which one is received through other means (though he is apparently open to the possibility of me being received before the next Easter Vigil roles around...depending on how it goes...I think he implied that it's up to the bishop). Perhaps jurisdictions vary? I am in Canada.
