AnneLine
So, Future Priest -- you can stop while you are ahead (after passing that GED class) and end up like me, Sr. Marie and Lil'Red.... or you can... become a graduate student of mathematics. If you are like me, this will be a very difficult choice.... NOT! But I have great respect for those of you who can do it!

I am still NO WHERE NEAR ready for grad work at any level. While I initially prepared myself for a career in mathematics, I am now convinced that math PhD students are insane. That movie is not a joke, nor a lie. :shudder:
I saw this in my school paper a few months ago. That'll teach these beaver dam kids these days who think they're so smart with their pop-music, and Katy Perry, and fancy coffee...

AnneLine
AnneLine, I must admit that I'm a bit envious of your skill. My mom taught me algebra in third grade. I'm now a senior math major, and I'm probably going to end up teaching a couple years down the line. I have NO IDEA how to teach the basic concepts, because I no longer have a grasp on what the basic concepts are, let alone how to explain them or even the difficulties inherent to them. I think, sometimes, that it's not good to seek to master something, because by doing so, you lose sight of the trees for all the forest. I don't feel like a mathematician, being unable to help nurture another's skill. To be a good math teacher I must, I think, unlearn everything and relearn alongside my students. Thank you for your witness, because I know I, for one, benefit from it.
Deus te Amat, you will never know how wonderful your words made me feel. I think that it is partly charisms (gifts of the Holy Spirit intended to help all God's people) and also a whole lot of empathy from having been EXACTLY where Future Priest is. The combo makes me a pretty good teacher, especially 1:1. I don't know if you have ever seen the movie made of Chaim Potok's fantastic novel, The Chosen. It's about two Jewish boys growing up during and right after WWII. One is a math wizz.... the other a talmudic genius. In learning to work together, each helps the other to grow in his strength, and is also able to help the other bridge gaps. I don't want to give away the story, because it is worth reading and/or watching.... but part of the reason one boy is such a good, empathetic listener is that he has had to learn what it is like to not be heard/understood. DtA, I have some idea of what the secret to being able to do this is... but the tuition is pretty high. After almost 20 years of being told I was an idiot, wasn't paying attention, needed to concentrate, was hopeless..... I know how devastating those words can be to someone who is doing the best s/he can do. As I said, they didn't realize I had a significant learning problem in the math area until I was in my late 20's. It almost broke me.I swore at that point that I would NEVER let that happen to anyone again if I had to opportunity to intervene. For me, it was worth a night of trying to figure out how to use this blessed typing box as a math box to help Miles get started out of his hole. (I also had to remember how to do the math problem, which was another interesting adventure.....) I guess I just tried to imagine what I would be feeling if I were Miles... and then tried to explain it as simply and gently as I could. I know what it is like to operate with a 'swiss cheesed' brain (take THAT fiddler!). I also loved the 1990's TV show Quantum Leap.... sci fi meets Don Quijote. Oh yes! I love this Pham.... AnneLine
Adrestia - oh yes! (I'd prop you but they only give me a few each day and I need to horde....) Quantum Leap just talked to my soul. And my heat... and my inner nerdiness... and I could total see myself as both the geeky but soulful Sam and the wise-alecy and yet prophetic Al.... and I would have LOVED the opporftunity to hop into situations and right wrongs. For those who don't have a clue what we are drooling over..... oh boy! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DjK9GJMBpt0 Come to think of it.... a good example of applied mathmatics, eh DeusTeAmat and Brian?Hey Future Priest -- I think you may have started a HOT TOPIC! Anastasia13
That is interesting. Since you are a tutor, do you know if there are high pass rates for the math section?
I know very little other than what I will be reading in a book. fides' Jack
Algebra II hurts enough, but Calculus will get you out of purgatory. Geometry is a breeze though! Don't worry about that class!
Please - calculus is easy. I'm finishing up Calc III this semester. My only downfalls are working through the algebra involved, because if a mistake is going to be made, that's where it will be. Sure, I can find the second partial derivative with respect to z of 14x^2y^3/z^4 - where I fail is when simplifying that answer with algebra. homeschoolmom
When I was in high school I had a wonderful math teacher... the best thing she ever did was make us color code everything we did. Each step of each problem was done in a different color with the problem on one side of the paper and the explanation opposite it... It just made so much sense. I still remember it.
My algebra teacher was very plain-looking, but she had a really hot live-in boyfriend named Van. Van drove a motorcycle. She would get really behind in grading homework and hired students to come in on weekends to help her. (I was one of them-- that's how I know this.) We were at school for a long time helping. Van brought us lunch. When we were done helping her for the day, she drove us home in her VW Beetle. This is what I remember from algebra class. This is why I su.ck at math.
I re-took pre-calc in college after having taken AP calc in high school, because I was mistakenly told I needed to take a math class other than stats (so mad when I found out I could've taken stats and that would've been the ONLY math I needed in college! ) But when they told me they thought I should take calc, I told them they were crazy and I was NOT going to take calc again. Calc was the only class in which I ever actually got an F on anything. And the only reason I passed the final was because of a very generous curve! *shudders* I HATE calc!
