Brother Adam
I grew up in an area where everything from ignorant misconceptions from other Christians to "intellectual criticisms" from agnostics/atheists was the norm. People tended to listen to me more when I told them why I wanted to stay in the Church despite the terrible things people have done, and acknowledged that those things were indeed terrible. I personally feel that talking too much about "anti-Catholicism" in places like America only cheapens the experiences of people who actually have to deal with the possibility of martyrdom on a daily basis. Christ told us that the world will hate us...so the whole spectrum from blind ignorance to martyrdom is par for the course. Sure, all that doesn't change that it can totally smell of elderberries to be surrounded by people who don't understand or are even antagonistic. I've been there, it really bites. But like others have said, prayer definitely helps. Read up on different kinds of apologetics, and try to patiently explain things to people. I eventually got out of the habit of engaging with people who aren't interested in honest discussion and mutual understanding, because it was too much for me to handle.
We aren't as far from Catholics being martyred in the West as you might think. Some bishops have said within two generations.

Basilisa Marie
We aren't as far from Catholics being martyred in the West as you might think. Some bishops have said within two generations.
Sure, they've said that. But I don't have to go to mass in secret, I can carry a Bible or a rosary, and I don't have to worry about my local priest getting kidnapped and tortured until he named me along with the rest of the congregation. Until this becomes a reality in the West, I personally don't like to talk about how bad "Catholic persecution" here.

Blood isn't running in the street yet, but the prejudices against Catholics are well documented and growing continually more serious as the Church is impeded in her mission. Ignoring those sociopolitical prejudices can be just as bad.
dominicansoul
for over 40 years i've been battling anti-catholic persecution...from within the Church itself... in the past, liberals, modernists really gave my family and I a hard time in the home-town parish i grew up in... we weren't the only ones persecuted, other devout Catholic families, suspicious of the unusual liturgies and the atrocious abuses were also targets. When I was in the convent, other non-habited sisters from dying communities attacked me and my habited Sisters for what they see as a threat to their way of living religious life. Recently, with the whole HHS mess, I was attacked by fellow "Catholics" who angrily spouted how they were on birth-control and didn't think the Church had any business in their bedrooms, and they are still Catholics in good standing, because, "The Pope doesn't tell me I can't receive Communion when I'm being sexually responsible." ...to stand up for the Church and the Truth is the hardest thing to do amongst fellow "Catholics", no self-pity here, just speaking the truth... imho, anti-Catholic persecution from other "Catholics" is a lot worse than the persecution we face from those outside the Faith... cmotherofpirl
Okay so I completely agree with you but I feel you hinting that I was not kind in this thread so I will direct you to some of the post above where people where basically saying they can't feel bad about hurting me. Hmmmmm... that sounds like a double standard to me. I can't help but be hurt by that. I'm pretty sure Jesus wouldn't treat people like that. I also think I should be able to defend my self and not be labeled as "pretentious" and "unreasonable". I already said I was sorry for any hurt feelings I may have caused. I don't know why no one has accepted my apology. And even if I am making no sense It doesn't call for insults. Disagreeing is okay.
Again dearie you are playing the victim role, like you were attacked. You were not. People posted links which you refused to read because you ASSUMED it was anti-catholic. They were not. Nowhere have I seen the words unreasonable or pretentious in any post. Anomaly and Jesus_lol are not anti-catholic, and you certainly didn't hurt their feelings, but their posts do reflect frustration and probably a walk away from the thread. You are choosing to have hurt feelings and feel insulted, but on an internet scale of 1-10, this was a 1. Pax.
I will state again that my internet was slow. (I think I already said that twice). And I am not playing the victim role. I am defending my beliefs. If it appears that I am playing the victim role it is only because others are victimizing me. And please don't make me repeat this again, My internes was slow. And I respectfully disagree with some of the comments on this thread. (I'm pretty sure I have that right). Out of curiosity what are we even arguing about? Because, so far all of the points people have raised concerned me and petty technicalities that really are not worth arguing over. I mean I just want to be able to talk peacefully and not have to argue and carry on like this. (I'm starting to think Phatmass is just one bug clique) I hope fellow Phatmassers can help me think other wise because so far I have got the vibe that I and my opinions are not welcome on Phatmass . I really like Phatmass but if everyone is just going to think I am a stupid overly zealous little girl then I don't see reasons for being part of the Phatmass community. This is just how I feel right now. I really like Phatmass and would not to leave over a ridiculous post that no one can agree on. I mean I like to pray for people and read everyone's posts and most of the time it makes my day really good . But today this thread has made me feel really bad because I don't feel welcome. I understand that from your point of view I came off too harsh but that is only because I didn't think my posts through before writing them . But from My point of view I feel like I am being pushed away by multiple users . I'm the type of person that cares about what everyone has to say (weather it comes off that way or not) so when users single me out and say I am being unreasonable and pretentious, it hurts. I have feelings and when my feelings are hurt it is a fact and that doesn't mean I am playing the victim role. Jesus felt horrible during his passion but that doesn't mean he was playing the victim role, he was being victimized. I just hope people can understand where I am coming from and that there are no hurt feelings between me and other Phatmass users. I apologize for any hurt feelings and only was acting the way I was because I felt hurt by other users comments. It happens to everyone so I ask that you have mercy on me. I forgive those who hurt me just so you know. This post was really long and I am sorry for all the rambling but I just wanted to be transparent with all the users. So, do you accept my apology? (I hope so)
4588686
The problem with claims like the one presented by Bro Adam, aside from the odd apparent yearning to be punished, is that its intention is almost certainly worng but in some instances it could be accidently correct. It depends on what you define as 'the West' Anything can happen in two generations but the odds of mass extermination and persecution of campaigns of Catholics in America and MOST of Europe as exceptionally small. Huge proportions or majorities of the population in America and Western Europe are Catholic and Catholics are well integrated into the power-structures. Even if they don't pass the purity test of come Catholics here they still have a strong cultural connection to Catholicism. Could you have a situation like Yugoslavia? I suppose. But that seems exceptionally unlikely as all Catholic countries in the West that I can think of off the top of my head, have been willingly codified for decades, unlike Yugoslavia which had been kept together by force. Where this COULD be a realistic option would be in parts of Eastern Europe where Catholics are a real minority and the right-wing parties see Orthodoxy as the indigenous religion of the country and Catholicism is a nefarious western infiltration. Even in those countries I'd guess that you're more likely to see the persecution of Muslims or Jews before Catholics as most of the parties still see Catholics as a 'Western' religion and therefore not as unwelcome as Islam or as predatory as Jews.
