I am trying to be obedient and to do what the Church is asking, but I am finding this REALLY hard going. There I said it in public. I've been afraid to say it around you guys... I sound like a heathen! I have attention deficit / learning disability issues, and all the new language -- especially the priest's parts -- are so distracting I just want to cry whenever I leave Mass. It makes it SO HARD to pray well! It's actually relaxing to go to Mass in Spanish or Italian these days.... because at least I am struggling with one set of 'words' inside my head instead of three.... Three you say? Yes... the new revised translation.... the one we've used for the last 40 years... and the EARLIER one that is so similiar and yet just a LITTLE bit different from the current one. It must be buried somewhere in my subconscious because unless i REALLY concentrate just on words, it rises up and out of my mouthlike Lazarus at the most inopportune moments. I am glad to have something to give God at Mass... I just wouldn't have thought it would be this.... Must be making progress, though.... haven't burst into frustrated tears for about 3 week weeks now..... Hoping to be able to pray well thru the Holy Week liturgies..... [/quote] Don't worry, at least I still love you. You're trying and that's what matters. It's not like you're going around saying the new translation is terrible and no one should follow it and refusing to try to follow it yourself. I'm sure it's been hard for a lot of people. My parents and I were laughing when it first started, because we were talking about how my Grandma would handle it. She is 83 years old and stubborn as all get out. In addition, she is VERY hard of hearing and because of that plus mild dementia she is easily confused. We could just picture her LOUDLY responding incorrectly for the first several weeks. She WAS prepared for it, however, because she made a comment to my Aunt about how "they are changing the Mass, here!" (We think she may have thought it was just at her parish, because they got a new priest). My aunt took that as a cue to send her a book on the changes and what was being changed and why. God knows your heart. As MS said, at least you are trying. This past weekend, there are some old ladies in mass near me that were saying the old translation and, to me, seem to saying it loud intentionally so people know they are not doing the new translation, as if to protest. I felt this very upsetting. I wanted to approach them with a cheatsheet and kindly say to them that this cheatsheet helped me with the new translation. But they shuffled out in the middle of the closing hymn and I did not get a chance. And what's up with that leaving in the middle of the closing hymn. I am so glad you have accomplished your 'transition' - way to go! A thought about the old ladies - they may be grumpily defiant.... but my bet is that they are just hard of hearing, and totally baffled why everyone is saying 'the wrong words' and so are speaking more loudly trying to do the 'right thing'. I had the same reaction as yours until my husband pointed that out.... and I think he is right. He reminded me that his grandmother would often pray her rosary MORE LOUDLY when she was upset or confused at Mass. (She didn't speak English, just Italian, so she had always prayed the rosary during Mass (hold over from years before during the Latin Mass)....except when we went to the Italian Mass -- then she would pay attention and follow all the responses quite happily. We did that as often as we could for her....Nonna was a joy, and it was a privilege to help her get to a Mass she could understand....) But it might explain things. You can try talking to the ladies... but I suspect they will think you have been drinking, especially if they haven't heard a word of what has been said over the last few months on this.....
