Selling Beer At A Church Function

Okay, Pham, I need your help! :nerd:

Okay, we are going to have a Jamica. This is a festival where we will have bands, game booths and food booths etc to raise funds for the Parish. We have never had beer sold at this function and now we are in the midst of debating whether or not to sell at this function because frankly we are DESPERATE for money (aren't all our parishes? ).

I am against having beer sold at a Catholic/Christian event where family will be present. We will have rock climbing, moonwalks, etc AND a BIG BAND. But beer?

The reasons for having beer (by the beer sellers) is:
1. The ppl will bring it in anyway.
2. Beer is going to make LOTS of MONEY. (we can't do it without beer)
3. This other church does it......

Okay, I am against this......I need REALLY good reasons why NOT to have beer sold at this function. I truly believe this Jamica WILL be a success without beer.

So, reasons against? come on, ppl!!!!!!

Input!!!!

Oh, yeah, and I'm not against drinking per se.......at weddings, parties, there are adults who can control (and some who can't) but oh well, but as a Parish council member, this decision is just too big to just allow it with kids, etc for the first time......

granted if we vote FOR it, I'll support it. <_<

but we are debating it......for the good of the community and the parish.

It has come down to "society" vs. "spiritual" (forget the spiritual) whatever it takes to make bling bling....... :P

man, my debating skills need sharpening.... :cyclops:

Ash Wednesday

I guess I'd like to know in what way do they want to sell the beer? Would it be on tap, in a beer garden type of thing?

Its wrong: the end [money] does not justify the means [selling beer]

There will be children present.

They will have to hire extra security in case somebody gets stupid.

Reasons for:

You sell it you can regulate it...

Drinking in Moderation is good and a gift from God.

We always have Beer - can't have a Crawfish Boil without a Cold one  unless it's a teen or children's function. I hate to sound too Puritanical, but if there are going to be kids, specifically lot of teens, don't have the beer b/c it sends the wrong message. Try something fun like Cotton Candy or Kettle Corn; those make lots of money too.

Indeed! I personally wouldn't have a problem with selling beer at a church function. But I would make a case for moderation, definitely.

What if you had a beer garden? They do that at the parish back in Indiana . . . you can drink a beer if you drink it insdie of the Beer Garden Tent and only 21 and older are allowed in the tent . . . we also have some casino style games for the adults in there who want to hang out . . . this way the people aren't over gettting drunk by the fish pond . . .or kids can't get the beer very easily . . .

If they're gonna do it, they should do it right . . .

If people are gonna bring it anyway, you might as well sell it. Just remember to keep the staff on a tight leash and tell them to ask EVERYONE for ID and all that. My old parish in Galveston sold beer at their bazaars every year back in the eighties. They kept it all in one room (with its own bar area), everyone was ID'd, and NO ONE was allowed to take the beer out of the room. If you designate a special drinking area like that, and it's secure and strict, you shouldn't have a problem.

That's how they do it at my parish carnival, and we've never had any problems.

I've gone to several church events at which liquor was present and can't recall any serious problems. Personally, I don't have a problem with it as long as people aren't getting plastered.

You also gotta have a few KofC guys around who will take anyone who gets drunk out behing the parish hall and give htem a good butt whoopping . . .

okay regulation is a good idea in a perfect setting, but we dotn have a perfect setting. im sure stuff like that works out fine in other parishes, but not here.

our community is known for drug-smuggling, crime, gangs, shootings, stabbings, we're known for the high number of murders and this is a small town. -_-

accidents are a norm here, we have lost friends and families in alchol related incidents......

and the person who will be selling beer is known for selling to minors and under-aged kids (the kids know they can get away with it, one of them just got arrested for it the other day)

now, there are plenty of reasons but thats not what this thread is for, we need cons because this is something major and dangerous.

all the extremes "what-ifs" and "could happen" you can think of are reality here when beer is present.

this isn't a debate whether its okay to drink or not, or alternatives to limit or regulate because that isn't the issue.......

so again.....please reasons against only are needed.

ps. this will be a FAMILY function put on by the church where kids will be present everywhere (same place, all day, together )

thanks peeps.

I personally would have no problem with selling beer in a controlled enivroment to Adults @ a dinner or Parish function as long as it is conducted appropriatly. Now it sounds like it is not possible in your parish because of the reasons you mentioned below. I would be wary of using spiritual reasons...but rather practical ones as you have mentioned.
