Diggety
I'd agree with Sammy on the competition tip. I'll check out a song or two occasionally, but only to analyze it for their mix and see how they put stuff together. But they are an enemy to our cause, and I only use their music to hone my own weapons of war. Unfortunately, secular stuff usually sounds better because they got the chedder for better equipment. Fortunately for us, the inspiration we receive from the Holy Spirit is much more driving and real then any inspiration I get from a secular song. There was one time I was half-asleep, and God laid out an entire beat for me in my head, samples and all! -clockwork
ilovechrist
it looks like my last post.. didn't post. lets try again.. i listen to them a little bit, cuz you can tell when some of them are trying to find a way to turn their styles around (i.e. R. Kelly's "The World's Greatest", and DMX)... but they almost always fall back on their original style (Hotel, Where Da Hood At). we need to pray for these guys ALWAYS, as we use our music to proclaim Truth! -ILC ... i also enjoy writing Catholic parodies of 50, OutKast, etc.. can be quite fun! lanie
Yeah I listen to Secular Hip hop and RnB, I haven't really got into the whole Catholic Hip hop/rap thing, I dunno, I guess I just haven't had the opportunity. I only own to Christian CD's the Youth2000(uk) CD from last yr - a friend bought for me and Delirious - World service, I won in a competition and I recieved it today. I know a lot of the music I listen to doesn't give out gd messages, etc but I enjoy listening to it, A Fransican Brother wasn't too happy when he looked through my CD's at a retreat and saw Tupac and Cypress Hill but I haven't found anything else I enjoy listening to, and I like I said I haven't really had the chance to listen to any Catholic stuff as I don't know have any and I can't really afford to be buying it and also the music thing on here doesn't really work on my PC so u know, its a bit hard. Why is secular stuff such a problem? Ppl are always tellin me that it doesn't do me any good and that I should listen to something a bit more positive, etc etc, but why? What is the real problem? flip's girlfriend
This is flip BTW, There are dope rappers who follow Christ, but there are also amazing rappers who are lost. I listen to both... I agree with 86 on the labels... the dopest rappers are: in no particular order... j5 Talib Kweli Mos Def Lauryn Hill Playdough Pigeon John Othello Visionaries Eminem (yes, he is lost, but also VERY talented) Aceyalone Del the Funky Homosapien Solhier the manCHILD Moses the Black Pharoah Monch Methodman and Redman K-OS (SOO DOPE) the Procussions there you go, just to name a few. i listen to all these cats, and does that make me less of a follower of Christ? i don't think so. i will give respect where respect is due. I would love it if I could rock mics with these cats and I strive to be as good as they are... I don't don't view my lost brothers and sisters as enemies... i view them as brothers and sisters who need God just as much as I need Him... the moment you view the lost as enemies, you lose all chance of evangelism. On this Pentacost day, let us remember the gifts of the Spirit that have been bestowed upon us and be sent forth in mission. Our mission to proclaim the good news to the lost world... not to point fingers, make enemies, or hold contempt for those who disagree with us-- but to love, care, and have compassion for those who have not expierenced Christ yet. exploring
I'll chime in on this one. I tend to listen to secular rap on occasion. I was disappointed to see The Fat Boys missing from Flip's list however. I'm more of an old school rap fan, with The Fat Boys being my all time favorite across all genres. DJ86: Why not the tags? If you want to call them that. I believe they are sub-genres within the genre called rap. East Coast and West Coast rap are distinct sounds. Miami rap is different from East Coast. Classic, mid-school, and new school all sound different. However, problems do arise when someone is labeled as a "Christian" or "Catholic" rapper and it brings a negative connotation along with it. My biggest problem with current rappers is the profanity. What is with all the swear words? Chingy's hit "Tipsy" sounds good on the radio edit as "Everyone in the club gettin' tipsy." However, the album version is "Everyone in this b!tch gettin' tipsy." Since when is b!tch synonymous with every word in the dictionary? The same goes for mofo and similar words. Sounds like a lack of creativity to me. Can't they open a dictionary or thesaurus and come up with something better? The one thing that secular rappers have that I've noticed are catchier beats. However, guys like KJ-52 seem to have a handle on this one.
