EmilyAnn
So I don't do the whole no-meat-on-Fridays thing. It was re-instituted in the UK for every Friday a long time ago but I spoke to my priest because I have health problems that require meat as a big part of my diet. He told me I could just think of some other penance to do instead. I cycled through a couple of things but it always turned into a situation where I stopped eating that thing altogether so kind of ruined the whole using it as a penance thing. For Lent I decided to try the no-meat thing and it just does not work for me. So, I need a new penance but I haven't got a clue what to do. Any ideas . . . ?
Hmmm... since you mention health problems, I'm hesitant to recommend any food items. How about no hot water for showers? For me, that would be worse than meat. In fact, I would probably take showers on Thursday night to get around that... Hmmm... Nope, I got nothing.
IcePrincessKRS
I'm with HSmom. I'd probably give up something like my phone (except for necessary calls), TV, or computer on Fridays in a situation like yours. It's something I utilize every day and would be itching to do so offering it up would be beneficial in a sacrificial way.

MissyP89
You could pray a Divine Mercy Chaplet or a rosary. Or you could get out and volunteer somewhere on a Friday night...
Basilisa Marie
A friend of mine gave up mirrors. Like, papered over her bathroom mirror and everything. And she LOVES her makeup, lol. If you listen to music all the time (I do on my computer), you could give that up, or only listen to sacred music.
Slappo
Make your friday meals extremely simple. Make sure you get the dietary needs you have fulfilled, but simple meals.
dUSt
I cannot think of one single health problem that would not allow you to give up meat for one day a week.

missionseeker
I also have a lot of health things. I don't give up meat every friday, but for the ones in lent, I either eat coagulated milk sandwiches, shrimp or other seafood, beans, or even just gluten/wheat/egg free protein bars. unless you are allergic to all of those things, why wouldn't they work? they all have a lot of protein (as do eggs, to which I am dreadfully allergic). HopefulBride
he would know, he's a doctor in his free time.
hahaha In all seriousness though, I would say maybe instead of trying to find a penance, maybe think of some spiritual activity that would help in closeness to Our Lord (that's supposed to be the point of it anyways) Though I abstain from meat on Fridays, I don't really give up much for Lent. Usually I just make a resolve to do something like do my best to love the most irritating colleague ever, attend daily mass and/or do two additional offices of the LOTH. Of course it doesn't hafta be all of these things, just throwing some stuff out there. Hoping you find an answer.
It's not protein, I need iron. I'm hugely deficient and I don't eat seafood so I've been told meat (along with some other stuff like vitamin c) is the best way to go since the supplements make me really ill. A day may not seem like a lot but even a day just knocks me down. Edited March 30, 2012 by EmilyAnn

I like burgers and chicken WAY too much), but once a week it's certainly doable.
