Do you know HOW it happened?

And I would guess not too many kids will be going back to that youth group...so, even more fail

And my husband pointed out that probably a lot of people won't be going back to that church at all.

No! I saw it on the news and they said they were looking into the details and I never heard ANYTHING about it again...

It's no one's place to force children to experience what no child should ever have to go through. The whole point is that being persecuted is a tragedy... so that tragedy should be inflicted on people needlessly so that they'll know how it feels?? Ridiculous.

Intimidating children aside, while they were trying to show the kids what religious persecution was really like, it still was nothing compared to what people in other countries actually go through. Overall, a fail.

The people who did that to those kids are not *that* much different from the people who actually persecute Christians. There are many, many, many other ways to elicit an emotion on the subject other than forcing people to go through it themselves. I guess I just don't think that the "intimidating children" part should ever be... set aside.

If I were the parent of one of the kids who was 'abducted', I would be outraged and horrified! Heck, I'm both just reading the article. What in the world were they thinking of? :(

You are very right, it shouldn't. Children should never, ever feel threatened with a gun or have a bag put over their head. I was just pointing out that in many countries, religious persecution is much, much worse- i.e. children are maimed, see their parents killed, etc. From a practical standpoint, when working with teenagers, it's possible that some kid in the group could say "that was actually not that bad" (even though it's still horrendous) or see it as a joking matter longterm and get the wrong idea about the severity of persecution in some parts of the world.

All around, it is a frightful situation that violates the human dignity of each teen (as persecution in other countries does, as well).

My husband was saying that he would be suing if something like that happened to our child.I mean, really? AK-47? Bags over their heads? I'm guessing some of those kids will end up with PTSD.

I wouldn't doubt it. I suffered from PTSD after a friend passed away (I didn't even know him that well but I was really young). Kids are very influenced by environmental factors. If their safety and security is disturbed, they can become traumatized. Sad, really, that a supposedly "safe" place turned out to be a nightmare. :ohno:

I wonder if any of these guys will be crying "religious discrimination" when they find out what happens in prison showers...

As a youth minister, I have to say that this is utterly sick beahvior. I can't even imagine putting my kids through that kind of torture and emotional scare! It makes me so upset to see people doing this to kids. Isn't there enough emotional trauma they have to deal with on a regular basis that we, as youth ministers, try to help them cope with through God's help and grace?
Sick...absolutely sick way to "teach a lesson". Prayers for those poor kids who were probably terrified. I know I would have been.

There are so many better ways to teach them that lesson.

I once lived in a country where the practice Christianity is illegal. We worshiped in secret, without a church or for most people even a simple rosary or a Bible because people and luggage were searched when you entered the country. And while it taught me a lot and I value the little expressions of my faith more for it, I would never choose to go back. It upsets me to see people so desperate for persecution because I think it cheapens the sufferings of those who are persecuted.

If you want children to learn how Christians are persecuted in other countries then tell their stories. There are incredible men and women out there who deserve that.

And this happened because of adults they had some trust in.
I just can't believe that anyone would think this was a good idea, especially when they started seeing how the kids were reacting.

Hm. Sounds like, in order for this to be a good idea, parental permission and consent should have been secured WAY before the meeting.

As for felony charges, do we really want to load up the prisons with well-intentioned people? I don't want to have to pay for it. I say let a judge give 'em a good talking to and charge them for the court's time.
