Has anyone ever come across any good reading on food and spirituality, or even the relationship of dietary laws and the Covenant? I've come into some strong ideas on these areas that I've been journaling, but I want to see if anyone has REALLY written about it.

I just bought Made to Crave satisfying your deepest desire with God, not food by Lysa Terkeurst.

It's pretty good........lots of biblical references.

Could you elaborate on what you mean?
Sure...I noticed a few this while in adoration a couple weeks ago.
1) The first thing God did after making man was...create a garden of food and beautiful things...settled him in the garden and cultivate the land. Woman was created after all of this had happened, It makes me think that food is important...
2) Since God created this food for us it is an amazing gift from God that we often take for granted.
3) Every MAJOR change in God's relationship with us brought about not only revelations of God, but the dietary laws were changed by God as well.
a) Adam and Eve in the Garden...eat anything that grew except the tree of knowledge of good and evil.
b) Adam and Eve out of the Garden...eat only what you toil for.
c) Noah...eat anything but no blood. Interesting to realize meat wasn't an "approved" food until then.
d) Moses...keeping Kosher (blood still taboo)
e Christ... eat what you will but you MUST consume His Flesh and Blood
4) St Paul tells us to pray without ceasing and We know we have the universal call to holiness.

So I'm thinking that a study and true wondrous appreciation of food is not just of benefit to us physically but spiritually as well. I've shared these ideas with a couple of :priest: friends of mine and they liked the idea well enough, but they didn't have anything at the tips of their minds. Well read Catholics that I know liked the idea but had never seen anything written about food in this way, so I'm trying the incredible people here on PM. I guess in someways I'm looking for the "Theology of Food" like JPII gave us the Theolgy of the Body... :popcorn2:

cmotherofpirl, and Kathgirl, thanks for the suggestions I'll check them out.

I have a couple of books to suggest... don't know if any of them are what you are seeking. Hope this helps!

---------------

First one sounds like the sort of thing you are looking for... but I haven't read it.

Don't know anything about this one other than the reviews on Amazon and the click previews - but it SAYS it is written as a theological treatise on food... and they say it is Catholic (but who knows what that means!). It is also VERY expensive, but you might be able to get it from a library and/or thru interbook loan...

The Theology of Food: Eating and the Eucharist by Angel F. Mendez-Montoya

Check out the 'look' option to see a preview of the book...

http://www.amazon.co...33214091&sr=1-4#_

It also appears the paperback (about $40) is about to be released....

http://www.amazon.co...=pd_sim_sbs_b_3

------------

Food and Faith in Christian Culture Ken Abala and Trudy Eden, editors.

http://www.amazon.com/Faith-Christian-Culture-Traditions-Table/dp/0231149972/ref=sr_1_38?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1333215081&sr=1-38#_

This is a similar book to the one above... appears to be essays on various theology/food topics that is focusing on an ecumenical look at how different religious cultures treat food. Looks more historical than culinary or theological for the most part. Looks interesting if theoretical - chapter on Orthodoxy and food seemed interesting.

Is edited/collcted by a professor in a Protestant seminary, if that is a factor for you.... but looks well done (just have glanced at the 'Look" excerpt and read the reviews... havent seen the book.

-----------------

If you are looking for a good cookbook that will help you integrate the Church Year into your cooking, you might give this a look....
Ann Ball did wonderful studies of saints - graet research -- and this looks like a great 'Catholic' Cookbook.....

Catholic Traditions in Cooking

http://www.amazon.co...3214564&sr=1-26#_

----------

If what you want are cookbooks.....

From a Monastery Kitchen
12 months of monastery soups
12 Months of Monastery Salads
Sacred Feasts: From a Monastery Kitchen
(and it looks like he has come up with about 12 more books!!!)
(all by Br. Victor-Antoine D'Avila-Latourrette, OSB)

All of these are straight cook books, but the intro to the 1st is thoughtfully about food/prayer and praying thru cooking.... don't have the others but they are probably good. Focus is more on 'whole foods' cooking....

--------------

And I personally learned a lot from a book on Shaker Cooking that I can reference if you are interested....

And I loved the 'frugal gourmet' cookbooks for the same reason. I can also give you info on this...

The last ones are more about cooking than theology... but God slips through... you can tell that He is at the heart of the work they are doing.

As it should be with ALL we do!

Blessings!

AnneLine thank you that does seem to be in line with what I'm looking for. Now just to save up some money...your right that one is EXPENSIVE, who would have thought.

Kathgirl, the book did peak my interest. you should let me know what you think of it when you are done.

I think it is probabably an 'academic' book - so they figure students can afford it. RIIIIIGHt.

However, it looks like it is about to come out in paperback - that is the second link. So.... maybe you can see if you can borrow the book through interlibrary loan for now (usually that costs a $ or two) and put in an advance purchase request for the paper one when it comes out... ?
