I thought if god wanted a black pope, he would have put Italy in the African continent

They were probably not that dark. Northern Africans are more Arab-toned than black.

Well many would argue that before the Islamic Conquest, North Africans were of darker skin. IE: Many Egyptian pharoahs dug up have been black as the night.

Q:
Why Has There Never Been A Black Pope In Over 2000 Years ?

A:
Because the Holy Spirit does not believe in affirmative action.

Real A:
There have been three as previously cited. What their skin tone was is up for debate, but we have had more than white popes.

So you complaining about him being painted whitish seems a little silly...

Haha, I had the exact thought while typing it.

Really? I've only ever seen pictures of him depicted as dark-skinned. Even just searching google now there is not a single one that portrays him as anything other than black.

I stand corrected! To be fair, I was referencing in-church paintings and prayer cards I've seen--and while I get your point about the Google search, I still can pick out a few that have the general characterization I'm talking about, so I know I'm not crazy xD
Eyptologists would disagree with that. While the colour of a mummy's skin looks black, this is in large part due to the mum cation practice. They weren't white, but neither were they black, and the Egyptians themselves differentiated themselves in physical appearance from the black Nubians to the south, and the Near Eastern peoples, and the Libyans (who also weren't black, as such, at leastnot in Egyptian depictions; while the depictions were somewhat stylised and used some stereotypes, they can nevertheless give an idea of appearance)

God bless

I just wanted to add that there were at one point a couple of Nubian pharaohs so maybe that is where the suggestion came from.
There was a whole dynasty of Nubian pharaohs, if I remember correctly, though that was in the Late Period, which is too recent for me. ;) there have been many who've tried to claim that Khafre, Tutankhamnun, etc, were black, but I don't know any Egyptologists who accept that.

I was going to say this, minus the insight and facts...

There's got to be bad joke in here someplace about not being able to find a black cardinal with enough "soul" to be pope, but I'm too tired to think it through to a punchline.

Basilisa Marie

Seriously? 28 posts and no one making a joke about the head of the Jesuit order?

I'm disappointed. :|
