Groo the Wanderer

Been reading about it. Sounds kinda razzle dazzle. I'll probably d/l the book and read it on Kindle first though (through the Phatmass Amazon link of course) before I let my daughter see it. Need to judge if the violence would be too upsetting for her.

I would ask the people who have read the books and seen the movies about that. They seem to say that the violence is toned down in the movies.

Very much so, I was pleasantly surprised. There's one scene where the heroine drops a bees' nest on a group of other teens in the area, and one girl gets stung so much that she dies. The description in the book is pretty graphic and colorful, but in the movie there was just a really quick shot of her looking a bit swollen. You see a few snapping necks, "clean" dead bodies, some blood on weapons and a little on people, and a few palm-sized nasty leg wounds. The gore is really toned down, because if they portrayed everything in the book the way it was described it surely would have been an R-rated movie. But in the movie, the camera cuts away from the actual acts.

It's a violent movie, but not in a way that glorifies violence at all. If anything the point is to show how terrible these "games" are, and it's very clear that those people who love the games are the bad guys.

edit: I can't spell.

I read somewhere that the version of the film that's shown over in UK is different to America, apparently they had to recut it and tone down the violence to get a 12's film certification.

Personally I really enjoyed it but it is violent. Less so then the books but there's still the theme of children killing children. I love the scenes where we see things we don't get to see in the books because the books are only told from Katniss's point of view. Like the control room for the games, Haymitch talking to the sponsors, the uprising during the games.

Hmmm, I wonder how they're going to do all that with the third book. Might be kinda difficult.

That would be interesting, but part of the suspense of the books was not knowing what was going on outside of the Games at the time. Granted, I already know the story, but if you don't it gives away something that the books didn't.

We watched it last night. I poked or pinched my husband every time they deviated from the books, even if it was slight. He got pinched a lot. It was a good movie but it left me kind of wishing I'd read them after watching the movie bc I get nitpicky when they deviate from the book. It kept to the plot pretty closely, it was mostly just little things.
