Jesus_lol
How about that teachers can't be fired for failing students because the unions want to excuse them for it?
you are saying a lot of dumb things, but this stood out. why should teachers be fired when students fail courses? some kids are dumb and lazy, always have been and thats how it always will be
BG45
you are saying a lot of dumb things, but this stood out. why should teachers be fired when students fail courses? some kids are dumb and lazy, always have been and thats how it always will be
Amen. Here's an example of something people have demanded heads roll over, teacher wise, that we have no control over. Last Faculty Senate, the student body President stood up and complained vociferously about how horrible advising is and no one can get their classes. Well when you have less class seating throughout the university than you have students by almost 1000, that's going to happen. We get people in the office all the time complaining that they can't get the classes they wanted, or have their parents call. My favorite retort is "Well sir/ma'am, if [your child] had paid attention to the seven e-mails, the in-class announcements once a week for the past month, and the signs all over campus to pick up your PIN early and select your classes, they may not be in this situation." Those numbers are all literal btw. Next semester we'll be a week into classes and people will come in for their PIN because they've never registered. That said, the people who actually do come to the scheduling meetings and talk to us and get their PINs early? 100% placement rate into classes because they were pro-active instead of waiting to the last minute and the moment they could schedule, they were on and inputting their course numbers. Even those who only stop in on time to get their PINs without asking for advising tend to get into classes, because they don't need their hand held, just their PIN. PhuturePriest
Delta Air Lines was ranked the most admired airline in the world for 2011 by Fortune magazine. They consistently have the most well paid and happy employees among all the airlines. The difference between them and other airlines? Except for the pilots, their entire workforce is non-union. Coincidence?
And this is why I love you. Where were you when I needed you during the huge Union debate?
PhuturePriest
Lunch with Obama ==> fighting with chains. Interesting bit of flamebait this. On the topic of lunch with Obama: I bet it was a darn tasty lunch. Those Feds really know how to chow. On the topic of unions: it's important to have good unions. We mostly seem to have bad ones these days.
Especially since Obama is using that "special" cow meat that costs one hundred dollars a pound. Apparently if you massage a cow to relieve its overwhelming stress of having to walk around and eat grass, its value goes from four dollars a pound to a hundred, and of course, this is what Obama buys for all of his parties with taxpayer money. BG45
Ever even taken a brief glimpse at the DC public school system? If you did, you might change your mind about teacher's unions. There is no way that many problems are the kid's fault.
Trust me, I'm acutely aware of the rampant cheating under the last chancellor where teachers were changing answers on standardized tests (and other things) to simply meet (and exceed) the No Child Left Behind legislation that requires American public school teachers to essentially teach to the test or be taken over by the government. We discussed it actually in a course about reliability and validity (among others), for the validity checks employed to catch the disgraceful behavior. Unions are like every other group, when given too much power there's a definite problem because no one given power will freely step down from it. They can also be vital at protecting the rights of workers. My home state has a love/hate relationship with unions. It depends on your profession usually; the miners for example, are quite fond of them after they tried to unionize last century and found themselves the only striking workers ever bombed by aircraft. The public school teachers aren't nearly as fond of their union, because it takes a lot of money and gives little support usually in return.
