Modest Prom Dresses?

Annie12

Recommended Posts

My prom is in may and I want to wear a modest prom dress. I am looking for either a ball gown or just and evening gown.

Does anyone know where to get a modest dress under $60? I don't want to look like everyone else that goes to prom because all they want is to have everyone look at their skin and that in no way sends a virtuous message. I also, don't want to spend more than $60 because it's not worth it. Thanks!!!

Check out local thrift shops :) Unfortunately, there's probably not much on the "modest" websites that will be in your price range. But don't give up hope, you might find something. Actually, I know a person that got her dress on ebay; it was beautiful!

I know this is strapless and all, but I'm kinda loving it right now. I think it's my obsession with green...

Out of curiosity I've been looking at prom dresses online and the prices . . . :twitch:

When it was my high school prom (not that I went) my friend's dresses were nothing like these ball-gown things I'm seeing online.

Annie, my dress was cut like the green one (showed the same amount of skin) and actually the same color, too. You could always wear a shawl/scarf around your shoulders if you were really concerned, but I think it's just fine as it is. Modesty is an attitude too, remember. :)

Consignment and thrift shops. Check Craigslist, but only ads w pictures and only go with two adults.

I know! it's crazy! Right now I am thinking about wearing my gown from 10th grade prom (my school does that). I just am worried because I have red hair and my dress in bright coral! I'm kinda scarred to wear that color combo. I got that prom dress for $30 on sale.

Yup! I have a dress with spaghetti straps and I wear a little white shawl with it. :)

(the scary thing is that I grew out of my dress, passed it on to my little sister, and though she is five years younger then me she fits into it...) :twitch:

Here are some dresses around thirty dollars... I like some of them and others I don't like:

My prom dress had spaghetti straps but I had a jacket that I put over it. Even if you can't find one with straps, you can always do that. It does help.

My two suggestions would be thrift shops (fashions a couple of years ago were longer, but use your good sense about getting one that looks like it's still in style, and not outdated). Also, Beautifully Modest (website) has really great wedding dresses. I know they sell prom dresses, but I don't know about the prices and selection on prom dresses. Their wedding gowns are priced decently. Also, Ross/TJ Maxx/Marshalls etc have random selections of long prom-looking dresses at time for cheap (and by that I mean $20), but it's very hit or miss. I have some friends with incredible sewing skills -- if you know some people like that, you can always have a dress taken in/added to/ made from scratch (although in that case you would have to find inexpensive material, because making a prom dress requires a lot of cloth).

Oh, and I vouch for shopping on overstock. I've never purchased clothes from them, but I recently bought a new wedding ring set there (yes, I already lost my wedding and engagement rings) and it was good.

Bolero with a normal prom dress that you could find, and maybe try to aim for a higher neckline?

Ok, Totus, I checked out the Beautifully Modest link out of curiosity. I know LDS women must cover their shoulders, but why is the cap-sleeve as the bodice of choice? A 3/4, regular t-shirt length sleeve, or long sleeves are just as modest and typically more attractive for most body types (flabby arms, anyone?).

What is the significance to the cap sleeve for LDS women?

End hijack!
