Basilisa Marie
I am not one to talk because I have never been asked to prom and never went out with any guys, but I would say, go with who ever you will be most comfortable with. You don't want it to be awkard so don't make it awkward by asking someone who you are going to feel weird around. Prom is supposed to be a relaxing evening with your friends, so make it what you want it to be! For me I would find it too weird to have a date at prom so I'm just going with my friends. I guess, just do what ever you will feel most comfortable doing.
^ That. She knows, man. Go because you want to have fun. At the end of the day, it's just a silly dance. Just because all the other kids are being obnoxious and dancing like they're in heat, doesn't mean you have to. Ask the girl you feel the most comfortable with, who maybe might share some of your reservations about it being a giant "romantic" lust-fest. Of the three years I went to my school's prom, I had the most fun when we treated it just as an excuse to get all dressed up, go out to dinner, and have fun as friends. It doesn't have to be any more than that. Prom is another one of those silly high school experiences that is usually amesome or terrible in the moment, but usually you can look back and laugh at your younger self. Or, at least, that's what I do. Man, this thread makes me want to dig out my and TeresaBenedicta's old goofy prom pictures from the year we went with a big group. SheisCatholic
You must love your mother a lot to be going to all of this trouble to obey her! I wouldnt bother going. Explain to your mom what you've explained to us (if possible).

Nihil Obstat
Inform your mom that there is a positive statistical correlation between prom skippage and income level later in life. (it's true.) You only need to go to prom if you plan on peaking in high school.
Guess who 'found' that statistic. A NERD! Anyway: I went to my grad (=Canadian prom), and it was stupid. Food was overpriced, the speeches were pretentious, the girls were catty for weeks and weeks, and then everyone got stupid drunk and danced like they wanted to have babies during their first semester at university. Do I regret going? Ehhhh... not really. Would I do it over again though? Doubt it. Assuming that you do have to go and do have to take one of those two, in your position I'd ask the former. You seem ambivalent about both, but somewhat more so about the latter.

Annie12
Take some friends for a nice dinner. At my schools dances we usually have no dancing. Just STUFF THAT IS RESERVED FOR MARRIAGE going on on the dancefloor. And people tripping on acid, and pot, and... Yeah! Sounds fun, right?
I understand. That stuff doesn't happen at my school's prom. (maybe at the after party though which I will not go to).

sixpence
other random story: The guy who sat behind me in homeroom asked me to prom... i was ecstatic because I had the giantest crush on him for 4 years. I was interested to see if we started dating afterward... but didn't really expect it. Short story, nothing happened, and now he has a boyfriend! Senior year, the guy who sat next to me in band asked me to prom, because I had liked him for a while, and then we dated for about six months. Now HE has a boyfriend. Yay for coincidences? lol ETA: And Gaydars. Terrible Gaydars. Or maybe we just make the best cover-up stories for guys who don't want to "come out" yet? I mean, it's not like we're going to be doing much to violate chastity... Edited March 23, 2012 by Basilisa Marie
