mysisterisalittlesister
How much does the clay cost per figure, roughly? At $10 you're making less than $5 per hour after material costs, so that might be a bit low. Although much higher and you may not find people willing to buy.
Per figure, I'd say, about $.25. Perhaps I could compromise and make it twelve dollars. People would probably be willing to buy at that price, I think.
mysisterisalittlesister
They are darling, and I also think they would be a big hit... which means you really do have to listen to what Nihil Obstat was saying. And.... much as I hate to bring up one more factor... if you make over a certain amount with them (and I don't know what that would be) you might have to pay taxes... and THAT can get really really steep! So... you may have to really look into this a bit. On the other hand... if you are donating them, maybe no taxes. Or maybe you can hook up with the guy who does the Mater Ecclesia fund stuff and have him 'vend' them and take the profits for his candidates who want to enter-- in fact, maybe he can help with the materials costs... they'd be a great promo item for him! You could make the little dolls in the habits of the communities the candidates are hoping to enter! The Carmelite Nuns in Notting Hill in London (where FaithCecilia entered a few months back) have somthing they call 'crafty nuns'.. They are fabric, but a similar kind of thing (but I like yours better. ) Here 's a link http://carmelitesnot...g.uk/craftynun/ They are charging 6.5 pounds for them, which translates to $10.31 (according to today's conversion chart... could change tomorrow). Their website says the price includes postage, but it would probably have an extra cost if going outside UK). BUT they don't have to worry about taxes (I don't think). And people are willing to pay amounts that seem a little high if they are 'giving' the money to the Nuns. If it takes you 2 hours, at least $20 and probably $30 -- but people probably wouldn't pay that much. Frustrating dilemma!
Thanks for the advice! Again, not really sure if I even am going to sell these at all. I hope I can, though I'll definitely keep the donating thing in mind. I'm thinking $12 right now, because it's not like I really "need" that much money right now. Those Crafty Nuns are ADORABLE!
is it all clay? that's pretty impressive.
Thanks! Yes, it is clay
Nihil Obstat
Per figure, I'd say, about $.25. Perhaps I could compromise and make it twelve dollars. People would probably be willing to buy at that price, I think.
I think you'd have decent luck selling them at that price. Maybe offer a discount if they buy over a certain amount. Say, $12 each or 5 for $55, or whatever sounds about right to you. You might get excellent sales if you were also to make some priests and altar servers. I think that would be epic. :D
i<3LSOP
is it all clay? that's pretty impressive.
She is amazing! She has made me clay earrings, and I have a little clay St. Therese from her and not to mention for my birthday she made a Little Sister of the Poor doll. Oh and she can make pencils, and little mini teapots, and little nuns and everything!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Papist
click HERE for a picture So I made this "Pink Sister" today and I'm thinking of making more orders (like Dominicans, Carmies, Franciscans, Little Sisters, and Sisters of Life) Should I sell them?
Nice work. Find Catholic homeschool mommies. I am sure they would be a real hit with them.
HopefulBride
Yes. What everyone said. I make rosaries and often time I have a hard time putting a value on things so usually I call in my friends, tell them how much I spent and how long it took me and they help me with pricing. Of course sometimes I have to knock their prices down lol. You want to factor in your cost but you also want to keep it reasonable, if your goal is to make money then you might want to price it that way but if your primary goal is to acquaint people with these orders and religious life in general then just charge however much you think covers the cost and a little bit for your donations. I of course would want an SMMC one
AnneLine
Couple of thoughts.... You could have examples and TAKE ORDERS for the various orders ') That way you wouldn't have a bunch of some community that wasn't selling..... Also.... wouldn't they make great pencil/pen tops? I could just see them sitting up on the pencils of the Catholic homeschool kids.....
mysisterisalittlesister
haha, yes I was kind of thinking of making them a little more simple, because their very hard to make. Here is a Poor Clare I made
Lil Red
what about testing the market for prices by asking your local CCW councils to sell them when they sell the rosaries and stuff during first communion time?
AnneLine
It would be cute to have a mini-chapel to use as a display when you are at a craft fair....you could also double-sell them as mini-saints for confirmandi....
Nihil Obstat
You could perhaps try to sell them in somewhat larger quantities, like ten at a time, to local groups like KofC branches, CWL, Legion of Mary, etc.

They're a lot easier to make and take a lot less time, materials, and money (thanks AnneLine!) I think I will save the whole donating until after I get settled. Then, I think I will branch out.thanks for all your advice, Pham!
