Lisa
They might be a bit deep theologically, but have your tried any St. Teresa yet? Interior Castle, etc. There's also Dark Night of the Soul by St. John of the Cross. For something a little bit lighter, The 15 days with _____ series is quite good. Here's one for ToA, there's also Therese. andibc
My SD said in our first appointment I should wait till I'm in formation to read Holy Mother and Holy Father
I can understand that suggestion. When I was young I read Interior Castle and was convinced I was still in the first mansion. I was overwhelmed with despair and it really did harm to my spiritual life. Over the past twenty years I've read all of the Carmelites plus interpretations and summaries of their writings. For an overview I would highly recommend starting with Fire Within by Fr. Dubay. I believe in Love is a beautiful book and wonderful for meditation. I would stay away from Conversation with Christ as it is dry and turns many off from St. Teresa's writings. I can't imagine why so many priests recommend it.

Indwelling Trinity
"The Spiritual Doctrine of Elizabeth of the Trinity" by Phillipon O.P. This has been almost a spiritual bible for me for years in Carmel. Simple Yet profound. Another is "Practice of the Presence of God," by Brother Lawrence of the Resurrection." "Within The Castle" by Mother Magdalene. A wonderful Pamphlet is,"You ask me what I do in Carmel" It is a 30 page pamphlet In which Blessed Elizabeth explains the Carmelite Vocation... Oh dear I can go on and on forever with wonderful Carmelite books I have read throughout the years!
Carmelshrimp
Have a look at anything by Ruth Burrows (Sr Rachel OCD). She's amazing. Very deep spirituality but writes in an accessible style.
Strictlyinkblot
St. Therese of Liseux: Her Last Conversations Very, very powerful. And 'Maurice and Therese: The Story of a Love', letters exchanged between St. Therese and a seminarian. Also, for something completely different 'Lying Awake' Mark Salzman. Its a novel about a fictional Carmelite nun. He does get a few things wrong, a lot of what he refers to in the monastery is more pre-Vatican 2. While its not about the Carmelite charism as such its beautifully written and very short, only 192 pages.
BarbTherese
Have a look at anything by Ruth Burrows (Sr Rachel OCD). She's amazing. Very deep spirituality but writes in an accessible style.
Her commentary on "The Interior Castle" of St TofAvila was truly amazing. A whole new perspective. I have forgotten the actual title and searching in my library for it sends shivers down my spine. What a mess! Found it on the internet "Fire upon Earth: The Interior Castle Explored" http://www.amazon.com/Fire-Upon-Earth-Interior-Explored-St/dp/0722044186/ref=ntt_at_ep_dpt_2 Edited March 20, 2012 by BarbaraTherese
