Hello Pham!

Over the while I've been on Phatmass.... I have noticed many of you don't seem to like Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Rick Santorum, Mitt Romney... basically all those who don't support abortion... or at least a little bit more forgiving on the life issues. I don't know if I am imagining it... but do ya'll support abortion, Obama, etc? I'm starting to get confused. :dunce:

Love ya'll and I hope this doesn't turn into a debate.

Ah... no, we don't like Mittens, Rush, Glenn, etc., because they're big-government warmongers and in all essentials committed to increasing the scope of government, foreign military involvement, spending, inflation, erosion of freedoms, murder, etc.. You name it, if it gives the government more power they support it.
They're corrupt hacks and shills. They're not friends of the Church.

Then who is a friend of the church? I have years 'till I vote, and when my time comes I want to be wise about it! I'd say from my limited knowledge right now it would be Santorum. :idontknow:

It's not their stance on life that they/we disagree with -- the majority of us here are proudly pro-life. Usually their problem is with other issues, like their stance on war or the economy. And then there's people that just don't like their personalities.

So while it's good that those people are pro-life, there are also plenty of bad things about them that we find hard to accept.

Hope that makes sense.

Understood. :)

No politician is perfect of course... but do you consider life issues the biggest thing 'ya vote by and then the other stuff?

if you were given a choice between eating two meals out of different garbage cans, and one of them had a cherry on top, would you still complain about that ones odor?

most people with real political views have a hard time finding someone in office that represents their personal beliefs 100%, and tend to find some amount of good and bad in most every one. So when i say the conservatives in canada are idiots, i can do that even though i think their take on gun registration(for example) is pretty decent.

but when i diss Beck or Limbaugh, its not because of their views on abortion, whatever those are, its because they are idiots.

I guess I am sort of debating  but why do you think they are idiots? :)

well, many of their individual politcal views not withstanding, its the overt propaganda, bias and fear mongering that really ticks me off, especially with Beck, i am less familiar with limbaugh.

Oh I see! So they favor sides and stuff when they should stay more neutral? :dunce:

(forgive me I'm 12) :)

That's what the Church tells us, yes -- abortion, etc is the most important thing because if you're not allowed to live, everything else is pointless.

But remember, you don't HAVE TO vote for either the Republican or the Democrat. There are always other options, and don't let anyone tell you that voting for a 3rd party is "wasted." The idea is to vote for the person who you feel best represents you. That's hard to do as a Catholic, but all we can really do is the best we can.

Good question. Since you asked me I'll tell you that I'm seriously leaning towards none of them being acceptable. Ron Paul perhaps, because he at least would destroy the status quo.
My personal policy is not to vote. I fully realize that practically it makes no difference to the outcome, but on a personal level I am symbolically withdrawing my consent from a corrupt, broken system. By voting we are participating in a system that exists for its own sake. The political elite do not exist to serve the citizens of their country; they exist to take more power and money. They give you the illusion of choice, because every candidate that they offer you stands for the same things. None of them are going to actually reduce government power. None of them intend to make meaningful change.
The rhetoric changes, but the essentials stay the same. Like Simon and Garfunkel said, "every way you look at it, you lose." So I don't participate.

That said, I can't vote for a Ron Paul because I'm Canadian. Would I vote for him? I think I would. I don't trust him because he's spent so much time in Washington, but going by his actions alone I think he may be the one politician in the entire United States who wants to reduce in every conceivable way the power of the government.
On the other hand, even given a Ron Paul to vote for, would I prefer to withhold my vote? Quite possibly. Maybe I'd rather remove myself from the artificial spectrum of acceptable opinions. Consciously put myself in the non-voting percentage.

The larger the percentage of non-voters is, the more clear it will become that "government by the people for the people" is a fantasy.

So yeah, I'm kind of weird that way.

But... our problem is that he doesn't seem stand a chance! Not many will vote for him. :(
