MissScripture
I've always worn my necklace with my medals on them through the detector. It has never set off the alarm, though one TSA agent said he was surprised it didn't. Just don't forget to put your liquids in the plastic bag and take that out. Adrestia
I started crocheting a few years ago while home with my family. They didn't appreciate my random guitar strumming while watching TV, and I wanted something to keep my hands occupied. Voila - scarf.

I play the violin and will strum it like a guitar trying to do stuff by ear.

[/quote] It is SO much easier to learn that stuff from a person than a book. I learned to crochet from my grandma. Picked it up lickety split. I've been attempting to learn to knit from a book. I can get about two rows and then I have major issues, I think because i pull it too tight, but if I try to keep it looser, it's way too loose. I really want to find someone who knows how to knit and can help me! My grandma knits, too, but for some reason she refused to teach me to knit... Today, (I volunteer at a nursing home Tuesdays run by nuns who actually wear habits) I am going to ask Sr. Joan if any of the residents crochet. Or even one of the sisters could maybe help you. When I was in college I had to get a sister to help me start a granny square for a blanket I wanted to make. She was so happy to help. As for my grandma, Idk. She told me it was too hard. But that's also what she says when she doesn't want to give me recipes of hers.

I have a couple friends that do that, too. Its one thing to "guard" a special family recipe, but when they're like that about everything it's just a little weird. Even stranger that your grandma does it, though. You'd think she'd want to share these things and pass them down to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. My Granny didn't have many special recipes that I knew of, but she gave her donut recipe to my mom and I was freaking stoked when I got my hands on it. lol I think she'd have been proud that I wanted it. My other grandma tried teaching me to knit when I was like 6. She had me and my sisters make our own scarves. Needless to say we never finished. Not because knitting would have been too difficult, but because she had us using two strands of yarn (to match the patterns on our winter coats) and it was just too much for our little hands to keep track of. Scarves is about the only thing I CAN knit, despite my great-grandma trying to teach me how to knit mittens. lol Great-grandma was amesome, though, she showed us how to quilt, old-school on a huge wooden frame, too. She did everything, sewed, knit, crocheted... I wish I could have picked up on more of it before she passed away.

I kind of think it might be that she wants to still feel needed and if we know how to make everything, we won't still want her to make it for us (despite the fact that she will always, always make it the best!). AnneLine
My husband's grandmother (Nonna) made the BEST crocheted slippers... and gave them to all of us. She passed away about 8 years ago, and we still miss her so much (but envy where we know she must be!) Unfortunately none of us can crochet -- and my husband had LITERALLY worn holes into his slippers - he was walking around on the bare floors with the uppers still clinging to his ankles! But he wouldn't let them go.... I actually purchased my 'nifty nitter' 'french knitter' tube knitter to create soles for his slippers for Christmas last year and darned them utntil the holes were gone (it took about 30 hours!) and then put a new sole made of knitter tubing... -- and I could swear - seriously - that I could hear Nonna explaining exactly what to do... in Italian. I don't speak that much Italian, but we always communicated. I am convinced she talked me through it.... I wish I had had enough sense to insist that she teach me to crochet -- and how to cook her pasta sauce. None of us have been able to duplicate her sugo..... TheresaThoma
Funny story about how I learned to crochet. My mom taught my sister and I at the same time and I remember getting so frustrated and angry that I stormed off to my room. My sister was able to get it pretty quickly (and it seemed to me, easily) and that just added to my frustration. The funny part is even though she learned it faster I have been the one to continue doing it. I don't think she even remembers how to any more.
