I'm serious. I think it would be possible to knit or crochet a kind of chain mail shirt out of steel cable. or maybe just weave it?
[/quote]
It depends on how thick of steel cable you want to use. Knitting the steel cable (if it is fine) would probably create the look you are going for.

Would it also be functional i.e. stopping blows from bladed weapons?

I am trying to learn how to crochet. It is way too hard, I'm just going to stick to knitting.

I've never had any luck with knitting or crocheting - but I do sew and enjoy it.

However... have you checked out the 'knifty knitter' - it is sort of like a cross between knitting and crochet. It is FAST and the work comes out a lot more crochet-like than knitting-like.... they come in round (for making socks and hats) and a 'long' loom that is used for scarves and afgans and things like that.

It looks best if you use thick or fluffy yarn (or two of regular yarn strands).

Here's a good overview article with some pictures.....

And if you want to watch someone actually using the thing, there are lots of videos on line. I think this guy "Mikey" probably does the clearest instructions on how to get started and use the looms. I've found it invaluable to just work along with him and pause youtube and replay if I get stuck.

They also have some super fancy looms -- and I guess people really can go crazy with these things:

Has anyone else tried these, and did you like them?

I don't know why but I feel like that is cheating... :idontknow: My sister in law got me one and I tried to use it but I found it soooo difficult. I think it is more relaxing to knit free hand.

Yayayayayayay! I'm so happy I crocheted a little square of softness! :dance5:

It is fun... we have been having warm weather... 'bout sixty-five and yesterday I was sitting on the back door steps crocheting and messing up over and over and over again!!! :)

I bought a set of the round ones years ago. I started on it a couple times but never completed anything. Unless you're really into it it's a waste of money. :hmmm:

Yeah... that is what I think. Yarn isn't too expensive and if you have about three different hooks... on large, medium, and small you are set...

Hey that reminds me, will they allow a crocheting hook on an airplane? I don't want to get in trouble because it is only my brother and I going and it would be best if we could get through security without problems... especially without mum and dad! :|

I googled a bit and from everything I saw you should be able to take your crochet hooks in your carry on bags.

Yeah, I've done it before. You can take crochet hooks, knitting needles, even cross-stitching needles and such on a plane. You just can't have scissors or other yarn cutters.

Him: Oh yeah. No scissors though. They real pokey pokey....
Me: Okay! That is great.
Him: Yo, you gonna knit me some sweater?
Me: I'm sorry but I can't do that sir! I just figured out how to crochet.
Him: Oh... you croquet...
Me: Um ... Another question... will they let me keep on a sterling silver necklace?
Him: It depends. If it some Religious thing maybe. If it not I don't know...
Me: Okay! Thank ya so much have a great day!
Him: You too little missus!

You should be fine with your necklace. I have a copper one that I always wear, along with a white-gold ring, and they never set of the alarms. If they do, just take it off and you'll walk through the detector again. Then they'll probably send you through the big spinny x-ray machine, so just don't wear your hair up in a bun or something, because they might have to pat it down. :) Ponytails are fine.

I fly a lot. :)

I go on airplanes a lot. In the past six years I've been on twenty-four airplane rides... most of them longer then eight hours.

My hair is made up of ringlets and curls that are blonde.... people like it when I wear it down therefore... I'll have my hair down!

Yeah, I have never had an issue with jewelry. Your necklace shouldn't be a problem at all.

Oh goodness in Europe they were such idiots about it...
It was only a crucifix. Seriously. :|
