AccountDeleted
Try reading Science of the Cross by Edith Stein (St Teresa Benedicta of the Cross) or or if that is too difficult for you at this stage, google any of the million other books written to try to explain these concepts. To start you off... here is a link to a blog that tries to explain a bit of it... http://www.fatherbillsblog.com/heart/2007/12/the-dark-night.html Don't be in a hurry to understand it all in one go. You will no doubt experience it as you go through life anyway

StClare_OraProNobis
I want again to recommend "Fire Within" by Fr. Dubay. He has a great chapter specifically on the Night of the Senses and the Dark Night. I think you will really love it JL! It is right up the alley of the questions that seem to be on your mind right now!
BarbTherese
Basically, I think it is when the human person can no longer find joy and pleasure in spiritual matters. The way forward then is not to lean on consolations and joy because they are totally absent - they no longer exist, but to lean on what Faith tells us though it may be totally dry and unrewarding humanly.
